Aaron Rome only received a four game suspension for his brutal hit on Nathan Horton.

Not long enough. Hopefully the Wild don't get past the first round so Cooke doesn't play anymore playoff games.

well the NHL does have to follow the rules of the CBA they can't just toss him from the league. 7 games is the most I can think of ever being handed out for a knee on knee type play

There were only 4 games left!
I think those hits, while brutal, are more mistimed then anything. We love open ice hits until one goes wrong as that speed.
What Cooke did was deliberate.

Another brutal decision by the NHL. I wish Cooke nothing but bad lucky for the rest of his career...and quite possibly a heat shot or knee injury to end it.

I heard on the fan 960, someone was saying that according to cba, a player loses his repeat offender status if he's incident free for 18 months, since cooke's gone longer than that without incident, he is considered a first time offender.

I can't help but imagine moon taking the contrary stance of not only should Cooke not be suspended but that it was a clean hit.

You have to give a person the benefit of a doubt when he looks like he's making the effort and saying the right things. I still think he did turn it around, for a while.
Unfortunately it didn't last.

You can polish a turd as much as you like, in the end it's still a piece of ####.
Sorry but I wish much harm upon Cooke (as far as hockey allows), and it's not really a knee-jerk reaction because I don't even know offhand who he injured or care about them, I just think Cooke's time for karma is due. Someone who deliberately injures people like this guy has made a career out of deserves it.

I was one of them. It seemed he actually had made strides to actually play the game clean. I guess some people are just incapable of change. Going forward, I don't care one iota about Cooke, and I hope he has played his last NHL game. I can't see any teams wanting him now at his age, with his reputation.

Thank you Donald way to look out for the players. Thinking about the week to week paycheck more than their long term careers. Very well though out
Edit - maybe you were, but forgot to agree to a Cooke clause

The NHLPA is in a unique position... they have to play both sides of the issue. They must both try to ensure the safety of their membership (the players) while also trying to protect Matt Cooke from discipline.

His 10th suspension .....wow.....I had to go back and google every incident and realize how big of an impact each incident made on every player involved.
Cooke should have never been allowed to step back on the ice after Savard .......

I still think he got away with one on Karlsson as well. It seems too brutal and gruesome to believe that it could be on purpose, but Cooke is the one guy that I think would do it.

Recovering addicts fall off the wagon. It happens. Addicts also have the ability to ruin other peoples' lives. I think he really did try to change the way he plays, and he was able to stay "sober" for a while. But, (and not that this absolves him in any way) his team is down 0-2, his coach is pleading for the intensity to be ramped up, he goes out and crushes a couple guys early, the crowd is going nuts....I can see how that's akin to putting a recovering addict in a bar with a great party going on, drinks or drugs flying around, everyone going nuts.... Again, absolutely not trying to let him off the hook.
Like I said in the series thread, I didn't like the Wild bringing him in to start with, and I don't like it any more now.

the only way i can think of to get this crap out of the game are that the intent to injure plays (headshots, exuberant boarding, kneeing, etc) have a double major penalty.
10 minutes assessed of penalized time, regardless of how many times the opposing team scores. Make the penalty so detrimental to the team that the entire organization has to live with the liability of these players. you'll very soon see players like this extinct, and players much MUCH less willing to cross that line.
Penalize the entire organization for such behaviour, not just the individual, and you will see results.
at the moment the wild should be quite content in a barrie/cooke trade off, which is absolute rubbish. The wild being penalized for 10 minutes essentially costs them the game and series at that point.

Indeed. If owners don't want these guys in the game stop signing them. Same deal with fans. This board was full of people excited that David Wolf may be a Flame based on a video of him making a series of cheap shots.
Right now players, fans, and owners hate this type of play. Except when it is by one of their players. Than its okay. That hypocrisy is why this is still in the game.
