Tried it out in Maui - pretty fun actually - didn't fall off but I I had sore muscles afterwards that I forgot I had - probably because I was using all I had in me to stay balanced and on the thing. I found it to be a great workout, but have to admit I probably worked 3-4 times as hard as my wife and only traveled at same speed - she was just calm, smooth and balanced.

Many people SUPing around this area and suggestions on where to go (pretty limited I know).

You see a lot of them in Sylvan. There is a place that rents them.

Just picked up an inflatable on Monday and did Barrier (very nice, although pretty choppy for the first time out. All it cost me was my pride and a good pair of sunglasses) and Spray lakes (gorgeous views, not as much fun when jet skis rip by...). Might hit Ghost or Kananaskis/Grassi today if the wind dies down.

Tons of fun and very peaceful. Nice to hang out in the mountains with a purpose.

Not at all!

I got this one from MEC:
http://www.mec.ca/product/5036-199/n...p-paddleboard/

Originally looked at the 4, but I was close(ish) to the max weight. Figured once I add the lifejacket and strap a dry bag to it with some water and snacks I might be pushing it.

The inflatable is uber convenient. I've been reading a few reviews prior to buying it and they've been praised pretty highly. (Although they do go slower than the fibreglass versions - so if you're headed out with a bunch of people that are on those, you'll be paddling a lot harder).

I opted with that vs fibreglass for 2 reasons:
- More durable. Unless you're docking on white sandy beaches, it's going to go through a beating when you pull up to shore. I can run right up on the "beach" (read: rocks) without worrying about gouging it.
- Portability. So easy to fold up and throw in the truck box. Didn't need to get racks to transport it, and don't have to worry about road grime or rocks chipping it on Smith-Dorrien.

About my only complaint so far is pumping it up. I'm going to look for a 12v pump for it. Getting it up to 15psi is more of a workout than boarding. At least if they included a dual-action pump it might not have been bad, but it's just a single. Kind of a pain but not a huge deal.

Just a heads up if you do get one (inflatable or fibreglass) - the way it's classified through government regs, you need to carry a whistle, 15ft of rope (you can buy a throw bag at mec for cheap) and (this one makes me facepalm) a bailing device. Since I want to carry as little as possible, I bought a little collapsible silicone bowl for camping. Packs away nicely.

To add a little bit of extra info (and a shameless plug for my work). I work at Sport Rent and we rent the inflatable NRS baron 4. I can't say enough good things about this board. We started with one board two seasons ago and after that went well we went to two boards last year. After the 1-2 seasons of very steady use we have had to do zero repairs to anything. These SUP's have stood up to being rented virtually every single weekend and we havent had to do any matenince, pretty much a dream item from a rental shop view. I have heard some of the lower end inflateables can be pretty unsteady but when you buy the higher end brands such as NRS you can't go wrong. We have once agained doubled our rental inventory and are carrying 4 boards this year, all of them the NRS baron 4 model.

I must admit I havent been able to actually try one myself but that's because they are so popular right now that with our limited suply I can't justify taking them out and costing my store the rental on them. Hopefully this little bit of info from the rental view on everything helps out and if you want to try one out then give my shop a shout.

What's the price to rent? Trying to convince a few other people to get into it.

A one day rental is $40 (but no reservation, just first come first serve) and two days costs $55 (reservations avaliable with payment),

Figured I'd throw this in here. After a few weeks of paddling around calm(ish) lakes in Kananaskis I decided to tackle the Bow (Ghost to Cochrane).

And to quote Scrambler from earlier in the thread - this happened... a lot..
