When you score 500+ goals in the NHL you were a superstar.

No kidding. Over 500 goals (37th all time). Over 700 assists (51st all time). 1216 points (40th all time). Two 50 goal seasons. Two other 40 goals seasons (and another at a 40 goal pace over 60 some odd games). 13 seasons with 20 or more goals.10 or more seasons with 40 or more assists.

In his draft class on Recchi, Selanne and Modano outscored him.

If he wasn't a superstar at some point in his career he was about as close as you can get.

He was the one running for his life from Berube. I thought he was a good skater, but Berube caught him.

Making about $55 million doesn't hurt the cause either

This is my favourite sequence of the entire brawl.

Dave Lowry, in his 1000th game, gets the puck and knowing that Berube's penalty has expired but he can't leave the box until a whistle, flips the puck out of play in the dying seconds (and gets booted out for doing so).

Berube comes out of the box, and Greg Gilbert gives him the nod to do his thing.

Berube, the biggest goon between the 2 teams (who started the whole brawl by hitting Giguere initially), lines up next to poor Jeff Friesen.

Friesen for some inexplicable reason, is laughing as Berube lines up next to him, maybe thinking he's safe. Then immediately tries to run away and turtle as Berube goes at him like he's trying to start a rusty lawnmower, tackling a ref in the process.

Fun story about the Flames/Ducks brawl.

The game wasn't televised anywhere (remember when that used to happen?), and so nobody anywhere that wasn't at the game got to see any highlights. I contacted the Flames and managed to get a copy of the third period copied to a VHS tape from the Jumbotron staff. I made a few copies and traded them to some posters on the hockeyfights.com forum.

Sadly I can't find the tape anymore, otherwise I'd upload a good quality version of the sequence to YouTube.

I always remember that shot of lonely little Jukka Hentunen on the bench, looking off into the distance, desperately trying to go to his happy place and praying he doesn't get a tap on the shoulder.

I remember the hype on CP prior to Hentunen coming over from Europe to play for us... oh god, the horror.

He was a best player not in the NHL.

That's a rip off!

But I'd pay even more than $200 for a signed Jason Weimer hat though

I personally don't remember the hype being crazy over him, but I wouldn't be surprised. I remember getting excited over guys like Mickey Dupont and Ronald Petrovicky back then. Although we had some decent pieces by then (Iginla, Conroy, Regehr, Turek, Morris), those were still pretty desperate times. We had just come off the Val Bure era, and were entering the Special Nieds era. Even had a certain Oilers coach playing for us that year.

This one game probably sustained us for the entire year.

It's a bit funny to me watching that video and relating it to the way things are now.

That video had a JSG getting run and punched, Vernon being cross checked in the head, boarding, unwilling players being run down, Friesen being needlessly attacked, guys throwing punches after the ref has intervened, guys throwing punches at guys laying on the ice, etc.

Anyone who thinks hockey has a respect/fighting/reckless behaviour problem NOW should watch that video. Hockey is certainly more gentle and respectful now than it's ever been.

It's funny at the end too when the games over and they say that there will probably be fines, possibly even a suspension

Possibly a suspension, maybe

If that happened today everyone involved would have to face some sort of discipline

Don't think Berube ever got a suspension for that game. Today him and both coaches would get 5+ at least

I'd be amazed if there weren't more than four 5+ game suspensions from that brawl. Plus a couple 1s and 2s.

Maybe you're right, but at least he can make Gretzky's head bleed.

Great story thanks. Roenick made a stupid mistake sucker punching Berube and eventually had to pay for it.

Roenick was by far the best player in NHLPA 93 even though he was far from the best in the league at the time. I wonder if it was a programming error of if someone at EA was in love with him.

Yeah, he was a monster in 93. Come across the blue line, high slapper, goal about half the time.
