Wow, just read this online. I felt so bad for him when the media bombarded him over all the Rob Ford BS (they were good friends, for those who didn't know that).
How utterly sad and devastating for his family.

Sad to hear. He was a well respected man, regardless of political affiliation.

I've long been an admirer of Jim Flaherty; when he stepped down a few weeks back, I thought, "Good for him."
Today's news has been very sad. He loved being a public servant for Canada, and he loved his family. Seemed like he would have been a great guy to know.
If you want a good cry, read this article about him from 2011 - his hard work for a plan for mental disability assistance, and his relationship with his son.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...article618491/
Mr. Flaherty went on to describe a family ride on a submersible at the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. He said they were “looking out the window at the sun’s rays shimmering through the turquoise water on the colourful fish and plants, when John said simply and eloquently, ‘That’s what heaven looks like.’ So now I know.”

I was surprised to hear of Flaherty's passing. I think Federal Finance Minister might be the worst job in the country. I can't imagine relieving yourself of that stress only to have this happen, and at that age.
64 still is very young.

This is a very sad day for Canada, Jim Flaherty not only served federally but also provincially in Ontario and finally stepped back from politics last month. Mr. Flaherty, with his steady hand at the wheel, guided Canada through the great recession and made Canada the envy of the world. Finance ministers the world over now look to Canada for guidance with their finances which speaks to just how well he did his job and just how respected he had become. Thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. RIP Mr. Flaherty...

Looks of policies that he implemented that I disagreed with, but I always figured he was the one Canadian politician that I would most like to have a beer with.
RIP.

Probably one of the more honest politicians out there, and a guy that didn't seem to be intimidated by Harper.
I think he was a very good Finance Minister and seemed like a pretty good guy.
RIP

RIP. A great man who really did help Canada through the major world financial crisis in 2008. It could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for this man. Sad to hear of his sudden passing.
