On a related note, now that TSN no longer has NHL broadcast rights, where am I going to hear Chris Cuthbert provide play-by-play? It sucked when he left HNiC, but now he's going to be non-existent. I imagine he'll still call CFL games?

I'm more worried about the consequences for CBC Radio, which is currently outstanding.

I assumed this has come up in these discussions before... but always felt that the cable/satellite providers should pay the lions share of the CBC budget (assuming they don't already). I know they would pass it along to their customers but it makes some sense to me.

A good point. They do advertising in game but limit it (no giant banners covering half the screen or audio delays to get some ads on the glass). Probably just a matter of time until Rogers has the hosts with Tim Hortons cups on the broadcast desk as the official drink of hockey.

I've always said that it should be subscription based in a cable package. That way if you chose not to view or support it you don't have too.
Make CBC Newworld a basic cable piece, but the CBC motherworld optional.
I don't watch it except for hockey, and since that's going away.

Well that would be the death of it... so not an optimal solution.

CBC radio has always annoyed me to an extent. There's some really dull programs on there and most of everything comes across as from the baby boomer generation's point of view, or generally catered to the middle aged to senior population. While they've been willing to cover just about every and any story, there's always been a level of closed mindedness on a lot of issues that seeps through because of that. The comedy programs on the weekends can be entertaining.. the debaters, I think it's called? That's a good one. But generally I'm not a big fan. More concerned about the implications on CBC sports, that while I can't stand a couple of the personalities, they generally put out some great programs and the production quality is top notch (looking at you, SN..).

Feel bad for the people that lost their jobs but this was a long time coming. Anyone that thinks the CBC does a good job on sports obviously never watched the CFL on CBC which was of RSN quality. There's a reason CFL popularity took off when TSN started covering it and it's because CBC did a horrendous job with it. They did do a good job on Olympics and HNIC was okay but had degraded over the years due to the addition of annoying personalities such as Healey, Stock, etc and extreme focus on the Leafs.
Bitter sweet as the worst sports network in North America now owns HNIC but it's the sign of the times that sports broadcasting is big $$$ and a public funded station can't nor should it be able compete with taxpayer money against private broadcasters for the rights to broadcast professional sports.

No, they are carrying games on Saturday for the next four years. New contract kicks in next season.

"While CBC will still broadcast Hockey Night in Canada NHL games on Saturday nights over the next four years, incoming rights holder Rogers will produce the programs, sell the ad space in the time slot and keep the revenue. "

Produced by Rogers, and will probably have a lot of differences in look and personalities.

as long as the guy who makes the montages still has a job........i assume that CBC uses the profit from sports to offset some of it programming initiatives.
in a lot of ways, it makes sense to leave HNIC on CBC due tot eh reach of CBC across the country

That's just CBC1. CBC2 and CBC3 are great, along with all the podcasts. I do agree there are some boring shows on CBC1 - shows about gardening and cats.
Long-term, maybe CBC can adopt the PBS model, with funding drives.

CBC is so old and antiquated in there business and practices it is pathetic. For years all they did was throw money at problems and invested in useless technology. I've had some crazy talks with Sony reps on what the CBC use to spend on technology they didn't need.
I applied for a job with them a year or two ago and the interview process was one of the worst things I have ever experienced. So disorganized and unprofessional I was completely blown away. I spoke with 8 different people about one job in the tech department. I even asked who people are and what relevance they had to my position (none) and nobody could answer the question. Pretty sure they pay people to do absolutely nothing around there. Don't get me started on the tech test you have to write in order to work there.
And their truck guys at the games are good at what they do but are so rude and arrogant you go out of your way not to help them.
The CBC has a place but how they run needs to be completely revamped. To many old boys running things and the gravy days are long gone they just don't realize it. Unfortunately with the way they do things it will be the dinosaurs sticking around with new young talent with fresh ideas out the door.

I guess you missed CBC's Olympic coverage where the hosts were drinking out of their McCafe cups every day.

I am disappointed that radio is taking a hit in funding too. CBC radio provides a unique product that is not available on commercial networks.

so it logically follows that private companies shouldnt be looking for govt handouts

CBC radio has easily become my favourite and only station to listen to in the car. It is definitely not the same station I hated when I was a kid. They've done a lot to appeal to a younger generation, without losing the older listeners.
