No team that plays defense like the Leafs deserves to make the playoffs. Randy Carlyle deserves his walking papers as unless you are the Oilers it's simply unacceptable to have no defensive system in place in 2014. At the end of the day it appears the Leafs need a coach that's going to make that group of players play with some structure which may be a tough task given that under both Carlyle and Wilson the team has been very casual playing without the puck. It's going to be a lot like when Brent came to the Flames and tried to get them to change their ways to playing a better two way game. Brent never did get everyone to buy in but on the plus side the players that didn't buy in are gone now and now the team actually plays the game the right way for the first time since Darryl Sutter was the coach.

Much harder to win when your defensive plan includes two HOF defenders that you don't have anymore.

3. Getting JVR into Toronto who has looked a lot better than I ever thought he would.
It's Nonis has made some big moves that have ensured Toronto some problems down the road including
Signing Dion through 2021 (7m lol) & Clarkson through 2020 (5.25m LOL)

1. Dion was not wanted here by management for a reason, Sutter should have got more for him but fact remains he wasn't a good teammate and a waste of $6.5m in capspace for a team up against it. In an attempt to make Dion into a better teammate and responcible player Burke gave him the captaincy..big fail.
2. Kessel hasn't been a bomb (80 points this year) but would you trade a 22 Seguin and a 20 year Hamilton for him? BTW Seguin now has 82 points this year. the only thing that might be worst than this trade is Boston trading Seguin.
3. JVR is the best player trade Burke ever did IMO, Good ol Philly.

And I'm one of them. I thought he had the tools and initially thought that as soon as he got paid he cooled his heels.
I'll be the first to admit I was wrong, the guy has the hockey IQ of an 8 year old ringette player and even that might be generous.

Without top notch goaltending the Leafs would be basement dwellers. Getting out shot the majority of the time means the team isn't playoff caliber.

I'm just glad that plug is someone else's problem now. I hope he continues to anti-captain the Leafs into heart breaking late season collapses for years to come.

Especially in hilarious fashion. That blueline stumble a few weeks ago was hysterical.

That is very insulting to ringette players.
The Leafs are horrible and so is Phaneuf. Stajan and cap space for him actually turned out to be an okay deal for the Flames.

It's hilarious looking at Phaneuf's stats, when his greatest seasons were with us. Now, he just gets worse and worse every year. I am glad he is not our problem as well.

1. Dion - Sutter bombed the deal right from the start. The fact that he didn't shop the guy and wanted to prove a point to Dion that he wasn't all that, was personal and it led the team down a bad stretch to what it is today. Dion still is crappy, but he wasn't worth the pittance he was dealt for. Giving him the captaincy helped him mature quite a bit, but not having a head for defensive responsibility exposes the guy regularly.
2. I'd do the Kessel deal. Who knew Toronto was going to be 2nd last that year? Nobody could have predicted that, and you can't build a team around the draft unless you have a few really good guys on the team to support a winning culture. Look at Edmonton. It's frustrating losing as a young player who the franchise puts a lot of pressure on. Edmonton tries this and fails. The Kessel deal allowed the pressure to be put on a player who proved he could score. The year the Leafs finished second last they were projected to be around the 8th in their conference. It wasn't foreseeable it would be low enough to get Seguin. Look at how lousy that draft was. It just turned out somewhat debatable, but it was a good deal for both sides.
3. JVR was indeed a good deal.

I dont get it. $6.5 was an egregious overpayment, how in hell he got a raise after accomplishing and offering a grand total of absolutely nothing beyond abject failure is a complete mystery to me.

Phaneuf at $1 million doesn't make him a better player.

What's great about this acronym is it has the ability to (and likely will) remain true for another 12 years.
