Don't know if they added this recently to the article because I don't remember reading it the first time but the pilot was not part of the government program that allows some pilots to be armed.

If he didn't have to clear Canadian Customs state-side, wouldn't this be an issue with the TSA?

Yes, there is no pre-clearance for US to Canada. Only Canada-US.

How's it different then the Aircraft Protection Officers? Even if he was allowed to carry in the US, it was stupid of the pilot but don't think this is the first time a loaded handgun has flown in a plane to or from Calgary.
