Interesting pickup. Been watching him for three years. One of the more high impact power forwards I have seen in college over the years. He will benefit from some time in the AHL but this kind of guy would balance out a Gaudreau or Baertschi quite nicely.

I remember him from training camp. He definitely made an impression, and there were some people who were disappointed that he didn't get signed I believe. Well, here he is
I know the Oilers wanted him. He is exactly the kind of player that is needed there. Well, like they say, "The rich get richer". Excited to see this kid play in the NHL. I think he can be a fan favorite.

Sounds like a guy who will go down to the AHL for a bit and learn to fight (after getting his toes wet up with the Flames this year)
eDIT: judging by his PIMs in the AJHL he might already having the fighting thing down.

Even better since he is an Edmonton kid that chose the Flames.
Also, any word if this is a contract starting this year? or one starting next year with an ATO?

Apparently the Flames recently (i.e. within the last three weeks) ordered jersey nameplates for Gaudreau, Arnold, Agostino, and two other guys (who I believe are college free agents). Obviously nothing official, but it looks like the Flames expect JG (and Arnold) will be donning Flames sweaters at some point in the near future...
Don't know if this qualifies as anything but take it for what it's worth...
The two college free agents were Bryce Van Babrant (who I understand was invited to Flames development camp last year) and somebody with a crazy last name I had never heard of. Looking at the list in the OP, I believe it is this guy:
D Scott Czarnowczan 5'10'' 176 lbs (Senior) 22yo
Stats: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=123299
only trails van Riemsdyk in scoring among defensemen

Thats going to be a bitch of a nameplate. No one on Jeopardy is going to be able to buy a vowel for weeks after they make his jersey.

Sounds like Van Babrant will join #Flames in Ottawa and make NHL debut during five game road trip.
Pretty cool that the guy will get to jump in for an NHL game this year, would be cool if it's actually on Sunday and we can get a look at him.

Hmmm the Flames article has him only at 195 lbs. Wonder where they got that number from?

As far as I remember, there IS no bonus cushion anymore, so, this will not help Calgary in the cap department, correct?

John Buccigross @Buccigross
Rangers/Blackhawks offered Q'Pac's Bryce Van Brabant contract but without promising games. Should play 5 games down stretch for @NHLFlames
Take that Rangers! and you too stinky Chicago!

This is great to see, especially getting him in the lineup.
For all the back patting about the rebuild going on the flames have two real rookies in the lineup plus Agostino on his tryout who I assume is headed down soon. Everybody else is a vet with a few mid 20s like Colborne, Brodie and Bouma sprinkled in. Glad to see the team getting younger but there is a still a ways to go. Riding a veteran laden lineup late in the season is admirable but not exactly smart.

Bonus cushion allows you to exceed the cap by 7.5% during the season with player bonuses. The amount you are into the bonus cushion may change if the bonus is no longer achievable (for example if the player signed a contract that gives them $250k if they play all 82 games but already missed some due to injury). If at the end of the season you need still exceed the cap with the bonus cushion because of players achieving their bonuses, that amount will roll over next season and deducted from next year's cap leaving the team with less cap space.
However the Flames will not be anywhere near the salary cap so it is a non-issue.
Also with the new CBA, performance bonuses cannot be used to reach the salary floor.

No there is a bonus cushion but it only applies to the cap ceiling not the floor (you can use it to exceed the ceiling but not to reach the floor).
Edit: Got sureLoss'ed.
