We're the only G7 country to never host it. FIFA wants to grow the game. We have a domestic football league looking to grow and the CFL already investing in new infrastructure.

It will be a colossal cost, but who so what?

And the US has more of a price (and has shown they'll pay it *cough* Salt Lake City). And they can guarantee ALL stadiums are 80,000+ capacity grass stadiums, something Canada cannot do. I think a joint bid is much more realistic with maybe Toronto and Vancouver hosting games. But Canada on its own would need to spend a ton, with the return on investment highly questionable (and very difficult to measure). I very much doubt some of the claims about what a World Cup could do to soccer in Canada.

Because we're Canada and dreaming big and shooting for the stars is not really something that's done here.

I'd love to see us shoot for the World Cup, instead of always coming up with excuses about why it's a bad idea. I doubt that Poland/Ukraine thought they had a great chance at getting the Euro Cup either.

There will be 12 stadiums used in Brazil this year. The lowest capacity is just over 42,000 and the highest is just under 77,000.

Because our nation is an utter joke in men's soccer. Even if the CSA got serious about developing talent today, Canada is a generation away from even being a mediocre soccer nation. Fix our program first, then start thinking about a World Cup.

On the flip side, Qatar initially planned 12 stadiums but has requested that it only need 8 or 9 because its costing an absurd amount to build the stadiums (and fit them with air conditioners to keep the 130 degree heat bearable). The Qatar World Cup is one of the most blatantly obvious examples of bribery ever. $220 billion is the projected cost to host the World Cup for a country of...under 2 million people. I'm sure the vote was on the up and up.

I hope Canada doesn't waste its time & money trying to sway FIFA into letting it host the World Cup. FIFA has to be up there with the most corrupt sporting organisations in the world. Possibly even more corrupt than the IOC.

This is my point: Calgary simply cannot host the World Cup, regardless of stadium.

It requires multiple (6, 8, 10, 12, whatever) world class stadiums to put that tournament on. So why is this conversation continuing?

This would lead to a huge interest in soccer and major investment in grassroots play. I HATE soccer, but even I think this would be a good thing.

Calgary would be one of the 10-12 stadiums used if Canada hosted the World Cup. No one is suggesting that Calgary host it alone.

Will it really lead to huge interest in soccer? For instance if Canada flames out in 3 games with losses of 3-0, 2-1 and 4-1, is that really gonna grow soccer in Canada? Is the elite athlete who loves hockey or basketball really going to start playing soccer instead? Highly, highly doubtful.

And while people can say it, the truth is most people will be rooting for a country besides Canada. Oh sure they'll wear their red on game days, but once Canada is bounced they'll go back to cheering for their country, likely one much better and more passionate about soccer. Like say Canada plays Italy in Montreal. I can legitimately see 50% support for Italy at that game.

And it helped South Africa big time since they hosted, seeing as they got bounced in the first round of qualifying for 2014. South Africa is a cricket/rugby country, not a soccer one. Qatar is a sharia law country, not a soccer one. Soccer ranks at best 5th in Canada in terms of important. I doubt it has much long term impact.
