So happy despite results of the season, love the way they are playing and especially love how much the team actually looks like a team, everyone seems so close and their for each other!
It's interesting that at this moment I'm remembering Feaster's whole deal about competing for the playoffs regardless and although it sounded kinda stupid then. I feel like I now see a little method to that madness.
Hope to the high heavens that a new GM doesn't want to bring in a new coach.
This is my biggest off-season fear as well. Hopefully we get a guy that has watched our games a fair bit and sees how hard this team plays night in and night out. Can't ignore the success of our last 25 games or so.

I think Hartley is a confident, demanding coach. And, he's frickin' awesome and patient with the kids. He's fearless when it comes to coaching, and that's a great trait to have right now with this team.
Burke is right; wins = work x system x talent. Hartley really has nailed the first two.
Not only that, he's hilarious with his quotes, and his accent is strangely fun to listen to.
He better be our coach for the next while. Highly, highly enjoy what he's doing here.

He may be hard on his players but it is done in a positive environment. Just doesn't seem to be a cloud of negativity around the team like you had during the Sutter regimes (GM and then coach).
Toronto is going through a similar thing with Carlye right now. The guy is always negative and I think it is starting to wear the team down.

The other cool thing here is that it looks like Hartley is a 'father', of sorts, to the players on this team. He leads them into battle and takes his lumps with them through the learning processes, and then teaches them to learn from these lumps. He's patient and tactical, and and uses the intellect and strengths of his players in situations to overcome any potential talent deficiencies. He trusts the abilities of his team, and exposes their strengths throughout the game when necessary.

Hartley has a very entertaining style of play as a system. I really had my doubts that they could pull it off in an entire season. Skaters have to skate much more. Forwards have the freedom to generate offence how they see fit - off the rush, dump-ins if you can't carry the puck over, different zone-entry stats, up the middle and away from the boards is fine - as long as there are guys covering, better skate like crazy on the backcheck!
I didn't think they could keep up this level of effort in all 3 zones. I wondered if he would lose the room, or if it was simply too much skating. He preached fitness, and he keeps the shifts very short. Flames are not looking like they are running out of gas late in the 3rd periods, or this late into the season. In fact, I think it is a much easier system to keep consistent for the season than a grinding game.
Agreed. And the system is working because management put together a strong-skating team, there are lot of young legs in the lineup, and Hartley is rolling three, sometimes four lines.

Been happy with Hartley since last season - Bouwmeester had his best season as a Flame under Hartley's system. Hockey was exciting again, though we got blown out a lot - lol. The only difference this year and last year was the level of buy-in, which I don't think could have been possible with the old core around.

I will never forget losing to Boston 9-0 or San Jose 9-1 under Sutter. Those are slaughters.
Another thing, Butler isn't playing top pairing minutes under Hartley every single game, which was ######ed coaching. The biggest differences are that Calgary has Monahan, Backlund & Brodie have truly responded to the coaching, and Giordano has asserted himself as the team's cornerstone d-man. Colborne has also taken huge strides.
Throw in some decent play by Russell, Smid, some jam from Byron, fearlessness from Bouma, and you get contagious work ethic. McGrattan should be back as the sheriff next season as well.

The great thing with everyone buying in is its a perfect for developing young players. The strides made this season by our players under 25 already eclipse what is happening up north in the last few years.
Hartley is doing a great job as a coach and a teacher.
Same goes for all the other coaches in Calgary and Abby.
Feaster hired the right people, drafted some good young talent.
Too bad he doesn't get to enjoy this.
Let's hope Burke doesn't do something stupid.
I agree. As the season moves on and we see how well Hartley is doing and how well our prospects are progressing, we are able to truly evaluate what Feaster really did and how much we owe him.
IMHO, Feaster kind of got a raw deal from management. (excluding Burke because Burke had nothing to do with Feaster's hiring and any promises made to Feaster).
