things went about as good as they could have for him. He's only helped his chances on this call up, hope he has the mentality of trying to take the starter spot next year. Probably won't happen but we need them to compete.

Probably could... but if Ramo is going to play most of the games then might as well send him down.
Burke said Ortio would stay up most likely unless they decided to play Ramo a bunch... didn't want him sitting on the bench.

I am selfishly happy as now I get to see him in person for Abby's playoff run, however lets be honest, this guy deserves to be in Calgary.

Glad they told him before the game. I think he had a good call up and I was super impressed with his play, composure and handling the puck. He's just got a natural goaltender demeanour.
The chance to play for the Heat in a playoff scenario and under pressure is great experience which the flames will directly benefit from next year.
I don't think we are in the hunt for points.
The front of house is really going to have to play all three zones from here on out which is good experience.

stupid question, but can Ramo be sent down at the end of the regular season?
Maybe get him some playoff action with Abby

The Flames have assigned Joni Ortio to the Abbotsford Heat ~ http://cflam.es/1lZ3rke
Ortio had to be assigned as he was recalled in response to Karri Ramo's injury. Ramo will return to the lineup tomorrow.
|
From that it would seem this was a planned move and not a kneejerk reaction to last night. Also, it is nice to hear that Hartley made a point of giving Ortio a lift on the bench.

Regardless of whether they had to or not, this had to be the plan for Ortio all along. He got to be the starter up here for a nice stretch, and now I'd say the best thing for his development has to be to send him down, get him comfy with the Heat again and hopefully go on a playoff run.
The above sounds better than even getting more NHL starts for the last 3 weeks of the season.

Ortio appears to need to work on his strength but besides that he has been very solid. Hopefully he can lead the Heat on a long playoff run.

It seemed like his mind wasnt in it during the game a couple times. I saw where the coach went over after and seemed to give him some words of encouragement, probably to not let it (the game) bother him too much.

Agreed, he knows he can play at this level now and will be even more prepared when he returns. I am sure this last game will just be a motivator for him.

I agree. To add to that I think Burke and co need to know what they have in Ramo going into next season. If Ramo can play like he was before the injury, then they can probably stick with a Ramo/ Ortio combo for next year. If Ramo falters then I could see the flames bringing in a better veteran to play with Ortio. Don't see the flames going with a young net minder and a semi-veteran that they only see as a backup.
I've seen posts saying don't bother with another goalie because it will only amount to a couple more wins. I highly doubt ownership, management, coaches, even players would see it that way. They want wins, even if it means only going from bottom 5 team to bottom 8 team. Let's face it this team is not tanking on purpose and never will.

How was Roy playing in Abbotsford while Ortio was up in Calgary?
Ortio is clearly te better of the two, but I'm just cruising how he fared.

I didn't watch any games while he was playing but from what I've heard/read he was ok. Nothing spectacular but not a sieve either.

Playing well in the NHL should give him the confidence going down. Hopefully he has a good end to the season and a strong showing in the playoffs for the Heat
It would have been a disservice to him if he sat as the backup for the rest of the season up here, with Ramo being back. I expect Ramo to be getting most of the remaining games so would rather have MacDonald on the bench than Ortio.
