We went to Mexico in August, just me the wife and 19 month old. Prices are way down compared to busy season, resort was not crowded, and it wasn't all that hot. Being right by the ocean moderates the temperature quite a bit. It was our favorite south vacation yet.

I've been to Mexico in late July/early August and it's the hottest place I've ever been to. Every day was around 45 degrees with a low of 30 at night. If you are sensitive to heat definitely not the place to go in august.

Then lure them East in search of Gold to Sutters Mill knowing that this takes you to Auburn, CA soon after the endurance capital of the world and an awesome trail network that hosts the Western States yearly. You will love this area and the kids will love panning for Gold. Tell your wife Tahoe is next up where she can shop around and you can hit the trails and the kids will want to be at the beach. You can keep going to Reno and past the numerous gold mines of Nevada before hitting the Salt Flats of Utah where the land speed records have been set and you will want to strive to get out of the area as quick as you can also. If you are driving you can do most of the above easily if you have a couple of weeks but if you are flying in it likely is too many side trips. Northern California is awesome though.
This sounds epic.......I had to work hard to convince the wife that driving to Seattle was the most cost efficient way to go........I doubt she would be open to anything more than a 15 hour drive.

When my brother and I were around the age of your kids we as a family went RVing down through Utah, to Vegas, then up California all the way to Oregon before cutting back to Calgary. Did it with another family and was probably one of the best trips of my childhood still (besides when we did the same thing in Australia up the east coast to Brisbane).

We were also quite an active family and went mountain biking and hiking, and then body boarding on the coast. We actually did this trip, well variations of it twice, once in a RV and the first time in a tent trailer attached to the Expedition. RV was much more enjoyable.

The driving is quite a bit, but it's broken up so much that it never seems that much, even as a kid.

Interior BC?
Nelson/Rossland/Castlegar area has amazing biking options suitable for any age/skill level. Kootenay Lake (bit cold)Arrow Lakes (bit cold), Christina Lake (super warm) for beaches. Hot springs abound, lots of cool gold rush era things to see.
