My guess would be that Burke likes him.
He may be small but he plays with the tenacity that Burke likes. When you have a little guy willing to play big that starts to wear off on other guys too, I notice that Backlund plays more of an edge with Byron on his wing. Kind of the "This little guy can run around and play physical, what is my excuse?" mentality.
IMO Bryon plays similar to Gallagher in Montreal (although he is not as good), and I believe both Hartley and Burke listed Gallagher as an example for how Baertschi has to play like when he got sent down.
I see him sticking around at least one more year.
