There are an extremely small amount of people on this planet or who have ever been on this planet that I would wish an excruciating death upon. He is one of those people. Good riddance you rotten waste of oxygen.

The only positive thing that might be said was that at least his group, although absolutely revolting in what they did, weren't violent and didn't kill anybody. So, on a list of people who deserve to die, he's not at the top.
Edit: Also... good. For the amount of pain he's inflicted on others I hope it's short and painful (Short because I don't want that guy using up good oxygen... he doesn't deserve it).
I don't wish or cheer on the death of anyone, feels very wrong, but certainly an interesting, troubled life he led.
Now back to your regular scheduled CP revenge and death fantasies hour.
Yeah, I'm not sure how people ethically reconcile the difference between verbal hate and desire for death and suffering. I would imagine most of the world isn't going to mourn or miss him, but I still can't morally differentiate between the the two stances.

Whether it is right or wrong, I have complete intolerance towards intolerance. Fred Phelps may not have done any physical violence, but he has caused more than his fair share of emotional suffering. Not just to the gay community, but to family members mourning people who had no standing whatsoever in the issue. No matter what he goes through between now and when he passes, it will not come close to the suffering the man has caused in his life.
Fortunately, as his antics became known, people have stood up against him. As I said in the previous thread about Westboro, over the last few years the only thing the church has done is galvanize forces against them.
It will be a celebratory day here in Kansas. We have put up with his BS at so many events around the city. Just recently his group was at the funeral of a young child who was kidnapped and murdered. He and his cronies picketed a local soldier's funeral who died in Afghanistan. The worst was this past fall, which I still can't even talk about in detail- one of my son's best friends died on the football field of an adolescent stroke-he was a D1 commit and a wonderful kid at 17, and they protested outside the cemetery. They said 'God hates fags and our football team was being punished because God is mad at humans' My family was at the hospital when this kid was taken off life support. His mom made the courageous decision to donate his organs, and he saved 7 lives and a 13 year old boy received the heart of a champion. The next few days of the wake, the funeral, the grave site- all a blur for his family, us parents and the fellow players. The patriot guard came out by the hundreds to create a barrier between them and us. And we didn't have to see them because of the kindness and compassion and the sheer numbers of the Patriot Guard. Fred Phelps is a despicable man. Hopefully his death will cause an unraveling of the organization.

I find it really fascinating that someone who championed for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, playing an instrumental role in striking down racial laws in Kansas, became the intolerant figure he fought against all those years ago.

Unfortunately, I would imagine they will rally around his passing and amp it up in his memory.
The best thing to do is give them no coverage what so ever. But a part of me wants to be there with a sign that says "god loves everyone, including dumb old ####### Phelps"
