Good grief!!!

Always find it interesting though how many cops need to be involved in an incident like this. I'll bet at one time there must have been 30 or some of them sitting in their cruisers working on the case.....
Yep!

My favourite, is always when a 20 yr old is shot in what has all the markings of a gang shooting, and a relative speaks glowing of the the youth, and they then pan to a picture where the you is flashing a gang symbol or is dressed in a stereotypical manner.......

"Working the case" is probably a stretch as well. I am guessing the "shooting team" and any sort of tactical and crime scene units are the only ones needing to be working in the aftermath (which is what is was by the time 90% of those cruisers got there). Most of these are just other cruisers from the district or those cruisers with nothing else going on. As one of the above posters said, you had cop cars coming from 10+km away fishtailing down Deerfoot.

Though I am sure "shooting" and "at officers" likely coming across the radio has everyone dropping everything, and everyone from that district figures they should be there, it seems any other cops with nothing else going on guns it to these types of things as well.

Also, either poor article writing in the above posted article or poor police work...story talked about the cops firing into the cab and "stray" bullets missing the passenger...did the cops really just start firing into the cab when they saw the guy with the gun?

I realize it was a stolen truck, and I also hope they knew that no one else innocent was in that truck. As with the incident in GP earlier in the week with the truck stolen with a baby in the back, how horrifying would that discovery had been?

Cops boxed him in (as he's heading northbound in the southbound lanes), get out to make the arrest, and he was still trying to ram his way out of the box. It was at this point that they began shooting in the cab. Might not have been explicitly necessary, but in the press conference Chief Hanson implied that they feared he was going to continue northbound in the southbound lanes, which probably would have ended up killing somebody innocent.

I haven't read anything where the guy even had a gun, the original call in the area was someone heard gunshots and they then found and started following a stolen truck which in turn started a chase. But no mention of a gun.

Since they said it wasn't stray gunfire I'm still interested in what the girl passenger did to provoke being deliberately shot.

I would say it was explicitly necessary to shoot at that point. Someone intent on ramming their way out of that situation is using their vehicle as a deadly weapon. The cops shouldn't have to wait for someone to get run down before taking him out.

Incidentally, the Sun ran a truly classless front cover yesterday regarding this incident. Focused on the cop who had been in a previous shooting.

speaking of the sun, some of the reader comments were fantastic and involved suggestions of the cops reaching inside and pulling out the keys.....perhaps some of the readers would ahve bene in a better mood if the body count was perps 0 and cops at something more than 0.....

it is not like this guy and his g/f were on the way to read to the blind, or pass out blankets at the mustard seed......

The part that gets me is...what do a lot of folks (like Sun readers) expect? That anytime after a cop uses their gun, they quit? "Oh noes, a cop was involved in 2 shootings! That's a pattern!" No, it's not. It's part of the job as a TAC officer.

Couldn't they have shot the keys out of the ignition? Or shot the throttle cable from the gas pedal?

Pfft.

Hahaha wasn't it that lady who had her son blinded by a cop who said "they could have shot out his radiator". Um yeah a radiator being shot at isn't going to stop the car.

If you shoot out the radiator you risk hitting the headlights and igniting the headlight fluid.

Put a .50 cal through the engine block like the movies, that'll stop the crooks dead in their tracks.

I'm generally one to question the police and their use of authority but this situation there really wasn't much they could do.

I'd love to see one of those commenters try to decide on what cereal to eat in under 2 seconds let alone make a life or death decision. When somebody drives down Deerfoot in the wrong direction and then tries to run you over with their car, you are excused for not wanting to get your head and arms in there and reach for the keys.

Apparently quite a few mistakes:

Kevin Martin ‏@SUNKevinMartin 5m
The #yyc man fatally shot by cops last Friday faced 23 outstanding charges, including four of dangerous driving in separate incidents.

And details:
http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/03/03...626000cf3e9781

Court records show Jason Gary Roy had charges from Calgary, Cochrane and Canmore last March, including allegations he tried to run down four Mounties.

Roy was accused of March 17, 2013 allegations out of Canmore and Cochrane in which he was charged with assaulting police officers with a truck.

In each incident he was also charged with dangerous driving, while the Cochrane charges included allegations of wearing a mask and stealing gas.

The Canmore charges involved additional allegations of flight from police, mischief to a police cruiser, obstructing officers in their duty and possession of a stolen licence plate.

The city resident was accused of dangerous driving in a March 2, 2013 incident in Calgary in which he was also charged with resisting a police officer, two charges of hit and run, and possession of a stolen vehicle and licence plate from separate individuals.

He was also facing March 14, 2013 allegations of dangerous driving, possession of a stolen vehicle and stolen plate, again from different victims, along with March 20 charges of possessing meth and a break-in instrument.

Emphasis added. A lot in a short period of time!

Oh sure. He was harmless. In that cute little way that cobras are harmless. Good hell, people are bent in the head.

He was a criminal. He didn't make mistakes. He made choices. Really bad ones. Action, meet consequence.
