Figure out what is different in your league vs a standard league. For example the league I've played in had no stolen bases, and used on base percentage instead of batting average. So guys like Michael Bourne or Jose Altuve are less usefull because their on base percentage is below average, and their stolen bases didn't count.
For pitching WHIP was not one of the categories. So with most of our categories being aggregate totals and only one being an average, it is worth putting out bad starters because the opportunity for wins, strikeouts and complete games vs losing out on ERA was worth it.
Also pay attention to league depth. In a shallow league, you have a good chance to fill every position with a productive player. In a deep league, don't go for Joey Votto over a good shortstop in round 2. Eric Hosmer as the 11th best first baseman could be just as productive.
