Why do people feel the need to shop on a holiday?

I think it's great that Costco gave it's employees a day to spend with family. Pretty soon retail stores will be open Christmas day like they are in the States

Because they don't have to work? It's much easier to do things like that when you're not working.

You have weekends and evenings to shop. Having worked many years in retail we called all holidays, "Shopping Days" as we assumed people had nothing better to do
