I get that but Burke does crazy things sometimes. Its huge waste of a buyout. But what are the alternatives? Giving up assets to get rid of O'Brien? If it was a matter of just retaining salary then he'd better get cozy in Abbotsford.

I was thinking it would have to be the latter. Burke should try to facilitate a trade, even for something minor, but if he can't, I sure hope he doesn't waste a buyout or eat salary just to keep O'Brien happy. I'd rather O'Brien just get cozy with the Heat, although I guess I could stomach eating salary on an O'Brien trade, not like we are short on cap space.

Nice to hear that Burke is working on getting O'Brien back in the NHL somewhere. Swell gesture.

I still can't believe that the Tanguay/Sarich / Jones/O'Brien trade went down. I know Tangs was pouting a bit and Cory was pushed down the depth chart but the fact the Flames only got two players whose only worth is reaching the cap floor is frustrating.

Compliance buyout deadline is this summer so if you have them you may as well use them before they are gone.

I could have lived with the deal if it was just Jones coming to Calgary as the total money would have been almost a wash but the Flames took the two worst players and the two worst contracts which makes absolutely no sense unless they really, really felt that Jones could turn back into a 20 goal scorer and impact player. Unfortunately if that's what they were hoping they were wrong. Very wrong.

1.1 million is nothing these days. I can definitely see O'Brien at 50% for a late round draft pick. Just need to find a team that needs some added depth for the playoffs. I suppose time will tell which of us is correct.

Even at 50% I don't see him moveable. The level of suck O Brien has is unbelievable.

Just isn't the player we all hoped him to be. Instead of being aggressive and gritty, we just got a softy who likes to do spin-o-ramas.

Glad Burke is trying to find him a new home elsewhere.

I can't actually remember him ever really being aggressive and gritty (though I don't remember him doing spin-o-ramas till he came here)....... he was always pretty terrible, not sure why Feaster picked him up.

Guys do you realize that compliance buyouts are use it or lose it? It is only wasting a buyout if the buyout is better used on someone else. Do the Flames have any buyout candidates? Ramo maybe? The Flames have two compliance buyouts remaining. If it goes unused this summer it is gone forever.

Burke has a reputation of being an up-front guy. He probably told him that he wasn't in the plans and that he would try and move him. I don't think that means he should retain salary or use a compliance buy-out.
Hopefully Burke can get something and everyone would be happy. If not, I am sure he'll fit in nicely in Abby.

This is a good point. If there is nothing else to use it on, then using it on SOB is not a waste.

Someone will jump on O'B at half price at the deadline. Burke will make that happen.

Flames may be better off using a normal buyout just so the buyout's cap hit helps them reach the cap floor.

I don't think there is a chance in hell that Burke could trade SOB without retaining salary.

SOB might be saying the right things now being in Abby, but i doubt he would be all that happy there next year. SOB is saying the right things because he knows Burke is going to go to great lengths to trade him or at the worst buy him out.

How so? I'm going to guess there aren't great ice facilities in Cabo or Maui. Maybe the guys on competitive teams aren't touching the ice this week either, but I'd be surprised if that were the case.

That's not to say that I blame them for hitting the beach, but I'd hope they wouldn't be doing that if we were still in the playoff picture.

Exactly. Bouma and Colborne going to Cabos during the break? I'm sure they're down there to take their nutrition and workouts to the next level. And McGrattan looks like he could hold his own in beer-lympics with the other tourists at his resort.
