I wonder if they use the same stuff in those rising frozen pizzas, those have a weird taste/smell too.

I really hope that isn't what you are getting from this article.

The title was a little bit misleading, but the substance is genuine. The chemical causes respiratory issues and banned in other countries for use in food. It is now removed.

This is a good thing.

The chemical causes breathing issues if it's inhaled, not ingested, and only at a much much greater concentration than the 45 ppm maximum that it's limited to in food.

Guess I am in the minority. Love Subway and the smell of the bread. Yoga mat material and all.

So subway puts chemicals in their food... Who gives a fata. How many people who signed that online petition smoke cigarettes or drink red bull? You don't want the chemical then don't eat there.

Too bad I didn't know about this chemical when I was in Home Ec.

I got a B in the class because my muffins had tunnels.

Take that, you and your straight-A report card

Very true, if you ever walk into a Whole a Foods the busiest section is the wine. Nothing like washing down your Organic, chemical free, rainforest alliance, fair trade dinner roll with a liquid that is 12-17% poison.

I have a buddy in the US who lectures me on chemicals in food daily, and smokes cigars regularly. I get a good chuckle out of it.

If I'm not mistaken, this particular chemical is used to bleach white flour you buy in the store anyway. I think some countries have banned it and use other bleaching techniques though. Why flour needs to be bleached white at all is a better question.

Link

Article by NBC notes that it also produces a carcinogen when baked called "urethane".

BTW, this stuff is in almost every single factory produced bread (think wonderbread), even at your grocery store.
