I have to chime in with a plug for my new favourite pizza.
Vern's Pizza is awesome. Great Crust, great sauce, good cheese, a tonne of meat...
I'm totally serious when I say that you've never had that much meat on a pizza before.
The T-Rex is awesome. The meat is stacked up about 1/2 inch high underneath the cheese! It's a carnivore's delight.
If you have the courage you should try the Mama Mia 18" pizza. It weighs 10 pounds.

Sizzling Wok owners were family friends. I used to visit Auntie Kim all the time (used to bring my girlfriends there too hehe). Yeah, they were very good.
Another place that's very good is called Bamboo Palace. I know the owner's son and daughter. It's a fantastic place. It's located right beside booster juice on Kensington. It's sort of like a Thai/Laos fusion. Try the Peneng Gai, you won't regret it.
Regulator75: you're thinking of Tropica. It sucks.
|
No, it's Mimosa and it's quite good.
Mimosa is a Malaysian restaurant? I'm pretty sure Regulator75 was talking about Tropica, which claims to have authentic malaysian cuisine, which it does not (not by a long shot).

My mom was good friends with Kim, it wasn't the best looking establishment but I've been going there since I was like 3 years old. A shame it had to close, Beef Satay skewers there with coconut rice was unmatched by any food.
And yes, Tropica is junk...
Yeah, we were family friends for many years too. I knew her daughters and son.
I was shocked when I heard they closed down. By far the closest thing we had to "real" malaysian cuisine in Calgary. Sad day that was.

A place called the Reef n Beef, across from the peter lougheed hospital. Great steaks, enough food to choke a horse at a very reasonable price!! Oh, and great 70's deco!!

If you're talking about the Pearl Dragon that's right on 9th, it's now a Vietnamese Restaurant.

Someone mention Nelly's on 4th? Yeah that's super good! They have the Ukrainian breakfast which is outstanding IMO. I like the quaint atmosphere to boot.
Best sushi place hands down in the city is Towa Sushi on 4th. Their sushi, sashimi, and rolls are a bit pricer than the rest, but they're absolutely huge, and they use cream cheese on the sushi, which is excellent as well.
I'll give honorable mentions to Buon Giornos, the Vicious Circle (for their choose-your-own pizzas), and the Broken Plate.

Really? That's horrible. Are you sure you're not thinking of the Inglewood Palace half a block down?

Places I frequent:
Breakfast--Ricky's @ Nose Hill Mall, Mon-Thur before 11am just as cheaaap and better than MickeyDees
Lunch--Cristy's Rotisserie Chicken inside Market Mall Food Court, trust me this isn't your regular fast food. Their quarter chicken lunch deal cannot be beat. Under $5 whether you pick white or dark meat plus a side, DO THE POTATOES! *drool*
Steak--The Keg downtown, 5 St SW & 11 Ave SW, this is the only Keg I would go to. For smaller budgets, Moxie's at Westhills is okay. I feel that Caesar's or Hy's is all hype, save your money and blow it on dim sum, see below:
Dim Sum--U & Me Restaurant, Chinatown, 3rd Ave & Centre St S, serves Dim Sum from 8am-5pm daily, best dim sum in town.
Sushi--Wa's Japanese Restaurant, 1721 Centre St N, across from Safeway. If I can't make it out to Miki's or Suginoya in Banff this is where I get my sashimi fix.
Alternatively: Misai Japanese Restaurant, 1915 - 32 Ave NE. Nice ambience, decent food.
HK Style Cafe--Sun Chiu Kee--Centre St & 14 Ave, cheap & fast, not the cleanest, service is horrible, so it's not everyone's cup of tea. Owned by the same dood as Misai, Calgary Court, Pebble Street, and Forbidden City.
Pregame dinner at home--Melrose on Red Mile, the place to get yourself liquored up before you head down the block for the game.
Catching a road game--Schanks North, Crowfoot Mall next to Cineplex. Biggest screen in town, waitresses are always pleasant, boneless wings...hmmm. I simply won't go anywhere else for a road game unless I'm actually on the road. Schanks South (Macleod Trail South) is an entirely different story, inadequate parking, long lineups, asswipes bartenders, stay far far away.
Happy Hour--Brewster's downtown, 11 Ave SW & 8 St SW, across from Safeway. Best beef quesadillas ever. Don't forget to wash it down with some Raspberry brew The one in Eau Claire is okay too but no free parking like the downtown location.
Late night hangout--Boston Pizza on Red Mile. Nothing special, just that it's open late enough for a quick bite.

There's a Vern's Pizza at:
127-575 28 Street SE,
Calgary, AB T2A 6X1
Tel. : 403-508-0220
There is also a new one located in Millrise. Unfortunately, it doesn't show up in online directories. It's in a little plaza on the SW corner of James McKevitt and Millrise Boulevard. They also sell pizza by the slice so you can try it out before committing to a whole pizza. $3.75 a slice but worth it.
Great stuff.
