Jews are an ethnoreligious group, originating from the Middle East.
Judaism is a religion.
Basicly, it's a little fuzzy.

I walked past them last spring with a buddy from work and they just stared us down. Then as we past they started yelling at us about being nazi's and some other stuff about being blind. But they didn't try to give us pamphlets, engage in conversation, or anything. Just started yelling nonsense. Very odd.

Bingo, that is exactly where I fall, but trade atheist for agnostic. I am a Jew by birth, that's about as far as I would ever take it.

I had a black guy in Toronto give me a pamphlet and start babbling on about how the African race is superior to whites and everything white people have is because of black people. I sarcastically told him that it was fascinating and to tell me more, and he told me how Beethoven was part black and that a polar bear's skin under its fur is actually black. Those were the 2 examples he came up with. It was really funny actually, but the stuff in the pamphlet was some of the most racist and Nazi-esque stuff you would ever read.

I'm not sure what's worse - these guys or the street preachers and anti-abortion nutters.

True, but the anti-abortion weenies have trucks, and the street preachers tend to set up near C-train platforms. So I tend to encounter the latter two more than that nutter Milan Papez.

Anyone know what that's about?

It was a protest against the horse slaughter plant there.

Is that anything to do with the wild horse cull that I heard about, but can't remember anything about?

No- the permits for round up have been issued but I don't believe that any horses have been taken yet. There is a protest about the wild horse cull in Edmonton at the weekend. I'll tell them to make bigger signs!
The horses that are slaughtered at Bouvry are through markets. Meat buyers. Excess breeding, family ponies that are outgrown and people don't want any more (shameful), old, unmanageable, sick, injured - people just trying to make a buck off the back of their faithful friend (well that's how I see it).

It's sad but that's really the truth here. I don't think anyone really thinks this guy should be in jail, but there's not enough mental facilities for these kinds of people anymore either.

I wouldn't think so - France, Italy, Poland - all of Europe has enough abattoirs. There is enough market here in Canada for what is slaughtered here. The Japanese have a huge demand for draft horse meat but they like the horses shipped alive so they can slaughter them in Japan
It looks like there is going to be another protest here in Calgary. Calgary Animal Rights Effort has a closed group (you have to apply to join) on Facebook. We always need more bodies and this is something a lot of Albertans feel very strongly about. I can always talk about this via pm if anyone wants to know any more.

Not trying to argue but interested: Suzles what would your preference be for these horses? Wouldn't a lot of them just be killed on site/at home if this option wasn't present?
I guess I kind of see it as a necessary evil. I don't imagine there is much profit in raising horses to be sold for meat.
