Why is he on the team then? His world renowned defensive play?
He's a sniper. He's there to score goals. That's his primary asset.

Care to post comparable stats for the US/Swedes/Ruskies? I don't think the small sample size makes much difference anyway, but it would be interesting to see.

Not so much of a track record
Pietroangelo 14 NHL playoff games and world Jrs. Bouwmeester 6 NHL playoff games and 7th place finish at the Olympics along with out of playoff WC. Vlasic no international experience.
Hamhuis the out of the play-offs WC
Basically the team has 3 proven studs (playoffs and Internationally)-- Weber, Doughty and Keith.
Compared to 2010 Gold medal defense:
Pronger, Niedermeyer, Boyle, Keith and Seabrook all were top d-men on at least 1 Stanley cup winner... Doughty and Weber were the young guys that earned their spots beating out Bouwmeester and Phanuef.

Bouwmeester also played on the championship team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
Plus Vlasic (79 GP) and Hamhuis (56 GP) both have playoff experience even if they don't have a cup, so can't just completely discount that.
Still not close to the same experience or pedigree as the 2010 defense though. They will miss the leadership of Pronger and Nieds on the backend for sure.

Based on your qualifiers for track record, could Mark Giordano be included as an injury replacement?

Seabrook would be on my speed dial. Only thing that get Gio any consideration at all is his year in the KHL.

7 1/2 more feet on each side of the ice ( 100 feet as opposed to 85 feet)
doesn't seem like much, but it is.
Speed and agility are paramount.

Especially since he wasn't that good on the small ice in 2010.

Giordano would be the first injury replacement if a d-man got hurt.

yep he was the 7th D-man on that team and had 3 HOF guys plus Weber, Keith and Doughty ahead of him.
Last year he was a top d-man and clear cut leader on the SC winning team.
I don't think that there would significant argument that he is a better NHL d-man than Vlasic, Bouwmeester, Hamhuis.... and even Gio.
Is he slower than Pronger? Would Pronger be on this Olympic team if he still was playing?
It will be interesting to see how this team Canada comes together......
NO older guys playing their last olympics before going to the HOF: Lemieux, Yzerman, Iginla, Pronger, Niedermayer...
and a lot of guys Duchense, Vlasic, Bouwmeester, Pietroangelo, Tavares, Benn , Subban, Stamkos (if he plays) playing in by far the heaviest pressured games in their careers.

If Gio got to skate in the Pre-game warm-up of a non-trivial olympic game it would be be by far the most pressure he will be under in his career.
He has a total of 4 games as the sixth defenseman in the 2007 NHL playoffs.... only because Regehr was hurt.

It doesn't really affect your argument since he would still be playing with him, but do you think BS would be as good if Keith wasn't his partner?

Totally... I mean of course Gio must handle pressure terribly and was only considered due to his experience on big ice. He definitely didn't handle the pressure of being named the captain of the Calgary Flames well. The guy only has 23 points in 33 games since taking on the role as NHL captain.

His goal is still to return to the Lightning's lineup before Sochi. He's been practicing with the team, so it's probably a realistic expectation.

You're wrong about this. Keith and Seabrook won the cup in 2010, after they won gold in the Olympics earlier in that same year.
Giordano may not have much playoff experience, but neither did Keith, Doughty or Seabrook before the 2010 Olympics. You're putting too much into playoff experience. Gio has played more games on international ice than all 3 of those guys put together (okay, probably not true, but he has a lot), and that is what would make him the first injury replacement.

I stand corrected..... but Keith and Seabrook had just come off 17 playoff games knocking off the highly rated (but injured Flames) and the Canucks... They played in the Conference Final.
to put some perspective on that accomplishment on the current Flames only Hudler (twice) and Cammalleri have played in a conference Championship series.
Gio's KHL experience playing a season against 40 year old Russians wilts compared to all the games played on the larger ice by every member of the Olympic teams except Canada and USA...
