A similar thing happened to my 80+ year old dad last year. He was actually coming to visit with us in Perth (they live in Calgary) but first went to Sydney to visit some friends for a couple of weeks. When my parents arrived to us my dad had a really weird mole on his face. We immediately took him to a clinic here where they removed it and sent it for a biopsy. A few days later the results arrived that it was a melanoma. However, they removed all of it and there didn't appear to be any residual effects.

Melanoma is quite common in Australia especially amont the older (50+) crowd. That generation used to run around without hats or sunscreen and now they're all paying the price. The UV rating down-under is often "Extreme". Besides my dad, since I've lived in Oz I've known 4 people that have had melanoma. However, the screening and treatment for melanoma has advanced so much over the last few years that it's considered quite treatable as long as it's caught early enough.

No cancer is good, but a melanoma, if caught early enough is one of the most treatable. Good luck to you and your dad.

So just to bump this up. I took my dad in to have the growth removed, I guess they tore out a 8 inch tumor or whatever you call it. I tried to bribe the doctor into giving him some botox injections because I thought it would be hilarious, but the doctor looked at me like I farted in church and walked away.

They sent the growth away for testing. We found out today it was Lentigo, but they feel confident that they got it before it had spread any further, so he's in the clear which is a relief.

However he now has to go in fairly regularly for the next year or so to be monitored.

Big relief all around since he had decided and told me over coffee that if it had spread at 80 years old he wasn't interested in getting the cancer treated.

This was all fortunate because he was aware enough to get something checked as soon as things didn't look right.

Now he just has to go in on Tuesday to get the stitches pulled out, I offered to do it for him for $50.00, but he graciously declined.

Just got the diagnosis back today, had the biopsy a week and a half ago. Off to the Cross Cancer Institute... Ugh!

Going to be a bit of a PITA dealing with this...

As others have said here in the thread, heads up on this one!
