Turning on your garbage disposal, throwing a fork into it and recording the noises it makes on dried papyrus, ink and an eagle feather is a better source than John Shannon.

Could be good for Buffalo. He drafted some solid players:
Florida (1994-2002 - only director of amateur scouting near the end): Weiss, Bouwmeester (granted high picks)
Anaheim (2002/03 - 2004/2005 - Director of Player Personnel - Amateur Scouting/college free agents): Smid, Getzlaf, Perry, signed Curtis Glencross
New York (July 2005-June 2007 - Asst Director of Player Personnel - Amateur scouting/free agents): Hagelin, Anisimov, signed Shanahan
Ottawa (July 2007 - now - Asst GM):not sure if involved in drafting

Ottawa has been really good at drafting lately... I don't think this is a bad move.

Button was good at drafting in Dallas and we know how that turned out...

So the answer is to hire someone with a bad track record at drafting?

Well he got the Flames within a game of the Stanley Cup (although it was in!), so I'm gonna call that a good outcome?

Just what the league needs, a 3rd GM with the last name Murray.

His experience says, he seems to be qualified not like our last GM.

No, just saying that someone with a good record of drafting doesn't translate to being a good GM. Doesn't hurt, but Button was horrible in other aspects of the job. Savard for who again? Buying out St Louis? Trading a future Conn Smythe winner and bringing in a broken down Turek? Highly suspect record and drafting those gems Nystrom and Kobasew sure changed the future of the franchise, didn't it?

I'm surprised that Benning wasn't named GM given his past Sabres connection. I'm surprised Tim Murray is a GM candidate because I thought he would stick with Bryan Murray. He deserve a chance at the GM spot though.

According to this:
http://www.buffalonews.com/feed/on-s...urray-20140107
Benning fell out of contention because the Bruins weren't willing to let him go until after the Olympics because of Chiarelli's involvement with Team Canada.

Sure but it just is a strange relevant. You still want to find someone with a strong draft record don't you? Which this guy has.

A little short sighted but the trade deadline is soon after the break and they have some important pieces to move. It's not like they have someone in place who can do the job temporarily like Calgary has.
