Great guy for the Heat if we get him back.
I never saw NHL upside, but he's good positional defender down here.

With Kanzig now signed he can fill the role of "big guy standing next to Johnny"

Don't like this move at all. He's been totally misused by coaching staff - needs to be paired with a puck moving dman.

Should be Derek Smith on waivers.

I was really hoping Breen was going to be better watching him he looked slow, scared, wasn't physical at all, still seems really far away from being nhl ready.

He already was on December 8th, and passed through, so I don't think he needs to go back on to be sent down right now.

Perhaps, but not before Breen. Smith can at least put in a shift.

Why? I really don't get the Smith hate. Seems fairly consistent to me and I never really worry when he has the puck. Not like I worry when Butler has it, but then again, Butler does get the tougher minutes. Still, I don't understand why Smith gets such a bad rap. He's fine for a bottom pairing d-man.

Smith is a terrible bottom pairing d-man. He has already cleared waivers for a reason. He is also 29 and is what he is.
I don't have a ton of hope for Breen ever being a full time NHLer, but at least he is younger.

Disagree. I guess I just don't see it the way you do. I don't see glaring mistakes. He's steady.

Finally.
I suppose they waited until New Year's so that all the other GMs who would normally be lining up to claim him will be too hung over to put in a claim.
The first time I saw him play was the game the Heat played against OKC at the Dome in 2011, and my impression was that he was a huge player with way below average skating skills. Nothing about that assessment has changed in the last 3 years.
With Wideman coming back, they won't be calling someone up now, but I'd like to see Wotherspoon or Ramage get the next call-up.

He's the Flames 8th defensman... pretty sure most team's 8th defenseman would clear waivers. I'd rather have a guy who can play a shift than a big young guy who can't play at all.

What Smith is and will be is better than Breen. No matter how young Breen is.

Hopefully those teams are ones that we will be playing against soon.
If you don't care about hockey skill then getting size is no concern.

Steady d-men that are making under one million dollars don't clear waivers.
