Gruden is going to cost a pretty penny to coax out of the booth. At this point I think he sees a chance to become the Madden of this generation. Just imagine, Gruden 2020 coming to a PS6 near you.

Here's a name that I wouldn't mind seeing the Bucs consider, and I can't believe he still hasn't gotten another shot after being fired for going 14-2, but Marty Schottenheimer is someone who can bring discipline and obviously a strong resume. Age is the concern there with him being 70, but I'd say he's about as good a coach as is out there.

Yeah, I'm also surprised Marty hasn't gotten another job since San Diego. He coached that team well.

I like Lovie Smith because I think he is the type of coach we need with the discipline and attention to detail. I also would like Whisenhunt because I think he is a good coach that had a bad situation with terrible QBs last year. Those two would be my top choices.

Not a fan of a college guy coming in and don't really want any of the top Co-ordinators either.

I would say right now my choice would be 1. Gruden 2. Whisenhunt 3. Smith

Beyond a guy I am totally forgetting those are the 3 I want.
I think Tony Dungy would be a great fit for that Detroit team but again, unlikely he leaves the booth

I think Marty has accepted that he's no longer a NFL coach and has moved on to the next chapter in his life.

For the most part most coaches get fired with a year or two left on their contracts. Guys like Andy Reid and John Fox got axed at the end of their deals hence why they got right back into the game. Most will either sit out or work as a co-ordinator until they need a new contract to get paid.

I think the likes of Gruden, Cowher, Dungy, even Brian Billick are done coaching. Even Shanahan is now likely to join that group, and I think Parcells is in executive only mode. So really the pool of guys who previously coached in the NFL with any success is really shallow. I think Holmgren is about the only one I can think of since he's failed so badly as an assistant.

Another relic who might return as a GM could be Carl Peterson. He has 3 probowlers this year out of his last draft with the Chiefs.

I seem to keep hearing that Mike Zimmer is the one mentioned for both the Lions and Raiders.

And Jon Gruden tweeted that he isn't interested in any of the jobs. I have heard Jay Gruden's name being kicked around a bit.

I don't think Billick is done. He badly wanted the Eagles job this past year.

Yeah, any team with three consecutive seasons in the playoffs becomes a place where other teams start trying to get coaches/managers from. I think Tennessee and Oakland will fire their coaches in the next month. Just waiting for more potential candidates to interview when some of these playoff teams have their seasons end.

The Lions seem to be a little stuck on defensive coaches lately. I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.

RT @EricOnSportsLaw RT @AdamSchefter Filed to ESPN from me and @mortreport: Bill O'Brien has reached agreement to become the new head coach of the Houston Texans, per sources.

Lovie Smith is the new Buccaneers coach. Done deal, as @AdamSchefter reports. Lot of former Bucs thrilled. #

Lovie just doesn't excite me at all, especially since Jeff Tedford appears to be his offensive co-ordinator choice. Defense should be pretty damn good, but if the offense stays the same it doesn't really matter does it?

The Bears have signed Jay Cutler to a 7-year contract. No financial terms yet, but considering what QBs are getting paid, something in the $100-120 million range makes sense.

Sounds like he wasn't happy at Penn State

I like this guy.

Maybe the Nittany Lions can get the Imagineers at Disney to make that Paterno statue animatronic so it can stroll the sidelines at Happy Valley.

The money will be key here. Cutler as a 13 million dollar a year guy is probably okay, lets the Bears keep him surrounded with Marshall, Forte, Jeffrey who might be the best trio of playmakers around a QB in the game, plus keep a decent O-line. If he's at the 16 million franchise tag or higher...he's not good enough to win games on his own and elevate lesser guys into serious weapons.

Still the QB ranks in the NFL are woefully thin these days and too many teams picking ahead of the Bears need QB's so drafting one likely wasn't an option. Thru trade or free agency nothing is really there to be had. I don't envy NFL GM's these days. There seem to be about 18 teams who have a QB they feel okay with and that seems to mean any of them could get paid 20 million...

The Bears paid too much for Cutler. He better becomes the 2nd Flacco to deserve this deal. He makes more than Brady does with this deal.

The Browns are very interested in Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and Vanderbilt coach James Franklin for their head coaching vacancy, and are expected to hire fired Lions coach Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator, league sources have told CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora.

The Browns are starting their interviews this week, with Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn up first Wednesday in Seattle.
