I'll go to say he'll be more valuable to the culture of a rebuilding club that whatever we'd get back for him (2nd rounder).
I really liked how Stempniak looked to start the year, but he has looked pretty bad since returning from injury.

I would trade him for a pick, we could always try and re-sign him in the off-season (if he makes it to UFA)

I highly doubt Stempniak is getting a 2nd

Everyone seems to be forgetting Glencross (aside from Moon). I think moving him would be a real interesting proposition, as he may use his no trade clause, but he'd also bring in a pretty solid return.

Byron is starting to look more and more like a player Flames should actually keep. He makes plays with speed and in-tight. I hope he stays up the rest of the year and we see a longer sample size though, but so far he has been the second best (after Hudler) player at making those plays out of nothing. I didn't even care if the Flames had kept him last year, but really (so far) hoping they keep him now.

Also very inconsistent and streaky as f***. His -18 scares me, along with the complete lack of point production in his last 20 games. I'd rather get a pick back for him and have his roster spot open to another player.

I'm glad you guys aren't the GM of this team, we'd be icing a team of all rookies.

Why would you want to trade Russell? What are you hoping to get that is better than he is now?
You might get a second rounder but you'd be lucky to draft a player as good as him. He's a young Dman who is playing well above his pay grade, that's the kind of player we should be building around, not dumping.

He playing above his pay grade now, agreed. However, he is not a top 4 d-man on this team when everyone is healthy and unless he signs a similar contract I would be looking to move him.

Agreed that he needs to be signed but assuming he does sign a reasonable contract what do you think we could get for him?
If it's anything less than a mid 1st rounder then we are unlikely to draft a better player.

The thing is that the Flames currently are just above the floor. If you remove the 13.4 million owed to Stajan, Stempniak, Cammy and Butler, we will need to replace that and then some to hit the new floor. If in the offseason, you throw Setoguchi 3/12, Goc 3/7.5 and say Niskanen 3/13.5, we will eat 11 million of 13.4 mil, get younger and in my opinion improve the team (not counting Cammy as our #1 pick should step in and contribute in the same ball park)

That of course doesn't count all the assets that should be attained by moving those guys.

I would pretty much keep everyone else for the time being and possibly look at dealing the next crop of impending UFA's next year (guys like Glencross and SOB)

You can't get rid of all the vets, otherwise you get Edmonton, but you need to cycle out the UFA's for either new ufa's or players acquired through trade like Russell, or have your elite kids that are ready step in. The team needs to have enough competent players in order to facilitate the kid's development.

Wouldn't be a bad move! He is playing great and I wouldn't regret having him sign long term, but if the price is right I think he is a good trade.

I could see Glencross moved in off-season or next years trade deadline.

I would probably look to trade stempniak and cammalleri. Keep stajan if he can be re-signed for a reasonable amount and term: 3 million per for 3 years. I really don't want to stunt Monahan's development by not having a veteran centre to play ahead of him... Unless the flames plan on overpaying for Paul stastny (which Burke might do).

I'm not a Chris butler hater as much as everyone else seems to be but I do think he should be gone.

I do not like the make up/chemistry of this team one bit. This might ne the most non descript teams we have ever iced. There is no one on this team other than the few I mentioned above that I would pay to watch play. This team is hot garbage.

Keep

Monahan, Mcgrattan, Glencross, Bouma, Giordano, Brodie

I'd like to see the Flames get rid of as many bodies as possible. This is the most vanilla roster in Flames history.

1. Help the team win (Brodie)
2. Entertain me (Mcgrattan)
3. Do both (Monahan)

Do 1,2,3 or get the hell out of Calgary. Bye bye Chris Butler.
