Pretty dirty play, although like others after seeing the replay of his face after the contact I do not believe any intent to injure was present. However what's done is done, it should be a small suspension but we all know how Calgary, Stajan specifically seems to always escape the laughably biased decisions of our glorious NHL principal.

He will get nothing.

I was at the game. Backes' initial reaction was not of concern, but a look of disgust and disbelief directed at Stajan for being down and injured. As if to say, "get up, you #####, you're not hurt". At least, that was my take.

I think that 99% of the time with knee on knee contact, that it is not usually with any intent to injure. I think a lot of time, it is a " oh crap, he's going to get by me" and a turn with the knee instinctively going out. That said, players need to be responsible for their knees like they are their sticks, and doing the best to avoid those collisions, so they should get a couple games even if there is no intent.

Brown got a major and a game misconduct in the first period of a game. The equivalent penalty would be a one-game suspension for Backes.

I think it was incidental as well. Sucks because it looks like Stajan is injured from that play. And I think he has been playing well lately, hence his frustration leaving the ice. I'm sure he will have a few words next time they play, hopefully Stajan is playing Jan 9th. Or maybe McGrattan can feed him knuckle sandwiches.

I don't think Stajan is hurt too bad, he walked off to the dressing room on his own.

Someone should have pounded him at the end of OT.

Shoulda been 5 and a game. He won't get suspended, but if you want to send a message call the major that runs into OT and likely costs your team the game. Backes isn't a dirty player but that's a borderline suspension so make it hurt to smarten him up.

I hate knee on knee hits, they're cheap as f##k and can be avoided 99% of the time.

Do we have someone with clairvoyance that could see that he was going to hurt Stajan in OT?

Dirty hit but I do not see a suspension bot because he has no prior history but because Stajan got off the ice on his own merit. I find the league funny like that.

It lookedb intentional to me. especially taking into account that he was pissed off from earlier in the shift being stuck im the Flames' net, add to that watching O'brien hammer Schwartz he tried to hammer Stajan, missed and caught him with what he could

Yes, because we can really afford to lose a player to a long, long suspension right now.

Since when does pounding someone after a hit get someone suspended. i.e. Andrew Ference.
Suspension would be for time traveling.

I thought they got rid of that rule under the new CBA?

I didn't think it was a dirty hit or worthy of a suspension. To me, Backes appears to have an intention to hit Stajan with his shoulder, and positions his body accordingly. Try leaning towards the left with your shoulder forward while keeping your feet together... you can't. I think Backes had simply positioned himself for the hit, and Stajan was doing his best not to get creamed. If Stajan doesn't try to get out of the way he would have certainly been lit up (with a fair check imo), but with the attempted dodge their legs were the sole point of contact.

Can't blame Stajan for trying to dodge, and I don't think you can point to Backes as trying to take out Stajan's knee.

I'm not sure it's suspension worthy, but if it is, for God's sake I hope it's not to "show Calgary some respect"
Dear lord.

Yeah, to show us some respect, meaning respect for our player who in this case wasn't happy with the incident. To show that it doesn't matter who it involves, it'll be treated the same.

Maybe that wasn't worded clearly, but go right off the deep end for no ####ing reason at all, why don't you.

Alas, Troutman wanted Backes pounded on at the end of OT. Presumably after Backes was let out of the penalty box and was skating his way back to the bench. Attacking a player in that situation would be 10 games minimum.
