Does Steen make Team Canada? He's been insane this year.

It's a three year term. They could've given him a $21 million deal and it still wouldn't be terrible.

Cha-Ching!

Holy overpayment for a career 50-pt guy, seems like a knee-jerk reaction to sign Steen ASAP just in case he scores 40+ goals this year and a bidding war breaks out in the summer. At least it's only 3 years so when the Blues realize their mistake next year, there'll only be 2 more years left.

Oh, and Steen also has a history of getting injured.

I think it's an overpayment for a career season that he will likely never match. That said he's been a pretty good all around player for them and even if he reverts back to career numbers a good player to have on your roster. The term is what keeps this from being a really bad contract as it's not a long time burden. The Flames assumed the 3 year $12 million remaining on Jones contract and he's a scrub in comparison to Steen so as a Flames fan it's hard to throw stones at this deal.

With the cap expected to have big increases the next couple seasons this deal won't be a much of an overpayment as we think. There'll be a lot of mindblowing deals in the near future.

I'm sorry, what exactly is so funny about that?

Matt Stajan: 678 GP 115 G 211 A for 326 career points.

Alex Steen: 570 GP 145 G 194 A for 339 career points.

So, an extra 13 points (with a career year this year) in roughly 100 less games, but does anyone remember that Stajan was buried for 2 years on the 4th line here? He might have earned it, but I would argue that he wasn't being utilized well.

Both are nearly the same size, play a solid 2-way game, and kill penalties. Steen's career +/- is +31 but he had one crazy good year on a stacked Blues team where he was +24, Stajan's career +/- is -11 but was at 0 coming into this year and has played on significantly worse teams.

They're basically the same player. I only argued that Stajan could be Steen if he found more consistency to his game and maybe was a bit more physical. They're both good players that aren't big stars. I think the comparison is apt.

While it's overpayment for an unusually high shooting percentage over less than half a season, Steen's 200 foot game and the short term of the contract means it won't ever be viewed as a wholly lamentable deal.

Have you read what Oilers fans have been saying about the Oilers lately?

And Steen for Stempniak isn't a terrible trade. Stempniak has gone on even hotter streaks than Steen (ie when he was traded to Phoenix).

With a rising cap to get a great 2-way forward on pace for 40 goals at 5.8m is a solid deal IMO.
