Be aware, Walmart's policy is not for the current price of the item. Its for the lowest price anytime before that day.
So if you purchased a $100 item from Walmart and went to return it without a reciept and 300 days ago they had a 1 day sale where it was $50 then they will only give you $50 for that item as they have no way of telling when you purchased it.
I realize its expensive for you to ship the boxsets back so you are thinking this might be a less expensive alternative. No matter how you try to justify it, whoever you return it to now has to try to sell that item again there by putting the onus and expense on them to house and sell the item.

When i was a kid i convinced myself that if i switched price tags and paid for the item, that wasn't really stealing. So i went to Sears and got all these GI Joes and Transformers and Voltron for $2-$3-$5. the cashiers were old ladies so they didn't know or didn't care. It worked for about 6 times until I read in the paper that a Calgary Stampeder got caught at the same Sears for switching price tags on a tennis racket. My criminal activity ended after only 2 weeks.

Its specific for WM because they happen to be one of the few retailers with a very relaxed return policy which is why they are likely to be defrauded in this instance.
Other retailers have probably wised up and dont off the same return policy and that hurts all of us.

My brother, who was a walmart manager for nearly 10yrs actually encouraged me to do this.
He said as long as it was an unused (sealed) item they sku'ed they didn't mind at all. Especially since you'd end up with an in-store credit.
Now their policy may have changed, but they certainly didn't see it as fraud then.

Or,you know...it's not like there isn't a major gift-exchanging holiday looming on the horizon.
You can't think of anyone at all that you know who you can't gift them to?

Ok. Confession post part 2. I helped ruin Costco's return policy on TVs.
I bought my parents a 32inch piece of crap Viewsonic tv when they moved out to canmore. It was terrible from the start but back then it was the cheapest thin tv out there. It was $899. So reading on Red Flag they mentioned Costco's return policy, which was never ending.
So 14 months later, Costco still stocked this tv but it was now only $499. I returned it no questions asked. I even told them that i only wanted the $499 back but the Cashier wouldn't do it. She could only refund the entire $899 amount..... I felt kind of bad so i bought a hotdog.
I guess a whole bunch of other people also bought the same tv. 3 weeks later they implemented the 90 day return policy on electronics.
Sorry guys!

You would be surprised what Wal-mart will take back. When my buddy was working there in high school he said people used to come in with 20 year old work boots and Wal-mart would take them back. Even the huds would bring back 1/2 used bottles of shampoo and bars of soap to return and Wal-mart would take it back every time.

My cousin would return prizes she'd won online, to WalMart for in-store credit.

I find this thread interesting. The ability of many of you to cast judgement when, in some form or another you probably have
A) done it yourself
B) know someone close to you that has
C) have thought about doing it yourself as well
I'll admit, I've done it with that crappy xmas gift that I didn't want and took it to the place that I would get the best price for it.
Just to add: I think people are missing the part on Wal Mart's return policy that anything over $25 will be issued in-store credit. They are just exchanging products for products, in the end they still get your money in some form or another

Besides the aforementioned sucking it up and returning it to Amazon, is there not a buy/sell forum here that you could list the items? Or Kijiji? Or some page on FB?

You guys realize there are much better places to confess then the Internet. By the way, amazon.ca has free return shipping. All you need to do is indicate a return on the account and change the address on the same box, no need for any shenanigans.

No they don't. He just swapped something He didn't buy there, and didn't want, for something that they stock that he does want.
Walmart didn't get any money out of him, and he is getting something of greater value (either direclty becasue he gets a better return price, or indrectly becasue he's got something useful).
Walmart, or any retailer for that matter, is in the retailing business, not the barter business.

The last couple of times I have been within earshot of WalMart customer service, I have overheard the following from people trying to return items without a receipt:
- No, we didn't seel this to you. We sell this item, but ours has a different UPC code.
- According to our inventory, we haven't sold one of these in X number of days. Sorry- we didn't sell it to you.

There is significant costs to exchanges and refunds beyond the obvious. You have to pay someone to do the refund, audit refunds, handle the cash ins/outs, restock the merchandise, etc. Add to that the very large and real cost of refund fraud and it's very significant.
As a retailer myself, I get very frustrated by the process. It is essential for good customer service, but the cost of it is painful. The entitlement is probably the most ingratiating
