If you are gonna rock disposable pens, there is nothing better than these, and they are only 3 bucks a piece. The guy that introduced me to them is a 7 figure CEO of one of the largest insurance companies in the country, and he swears by a cheapie disposable pen.
Here is a incredible in depth review..... of a 3 dollar pen.

I have more customers ask me for my pens, than they do for free floor mats, or free oil changes.

I like golf shirts but with subtle branding.
My wife uses pens but she gets ones she likes more than to give them out, although they do get given out a lot.
Reusable grocery bags is a pretty good idea and you could put a pretty large logo on it as people wont care if it is a good bag.
If you give a car charger, usb or bag, don't bother if it is a cheapy. I have some of each and they piss me off everytime I see them because they are so cheap.

Agreed. They are very nice pens.
The manufacturer was giving them out for free several years ago, and was advertising them as being the pen to use to combat check fraud (because the ink was difficult, if not impossible, to wash out of a check). Mine is still going strong...

Next time I stop by your dealership for free pizza on a Saturday I'll drop off one of these for you. They're the most underrated pen in the world.
Mind you, I draw a lot of diagrams in my work (we make custom stuff) and the multiple colours come in handy for keeping my pictures clear. But I also like having different colours in my notebook. Blue is my main colour. Red to check off completed items. Green if there is something different/odd that needs to be highlighted. Etc. I get all that versatility in something the same size as a normal poor-man's one-colour pen. Actually, I guess it's slightly bigger than a normal pen, but since I have big hands it's a win-win.

USB keys were handy in 2008. Nowadays, I just keep everything in Dropbox or Google Drive.
I'd keep a decent quality pen.

USB Keys or Gym Bags.
edit: Just to clarify on the USB key, make sure you are giving something that is reasonable in size. You give them a 2GB Key and it will be in the garbage before you even walk out the door.

I use letter opener almost everyday I got from my insurance broker many years ago. I wish I had more...one in the office, kitchen and work.
Looks something like this.

At one of Samsung's events, I got one of their Pens with a USB Stick in it. I love it.
Might be pricier, but indeed worth it.

I always wonder why companies spend money on golf balls. They do get used but the logo is rarely looked at. Admittedly its one of the better gifts you can get since it saves you from buying them but from a benefit POV Ive always wondered if you get your moneys worth.

I like the calendars that you can magnetically stick to your fridge.
I look at it multiple times throughout the day.
Only downside from your point of view is that people only need one, and if they already have one, they aren't likely to use yours.

Your post just made me think of a possible company logo gift:
Oven thermometers.
Or a refrigerator/freezed thermometer.
Both are very useful, both belong in a home (or an RV, I suppose), which ties well into the home business, and I don't think that I've ever seen one logo'd before.

Those are the worst pens ever, cannot stand writing with them. These are 100x better if we're talking about bic pens

I found a golf ball once with a Kokanee Gold label on it.
I birdied two holes with it, and subsequently bought a case of Kokanee Gold on my way home.
It was still awful beer.

I'd go with branded flashlights (decent quality metal ones that take an AAA battery).
Nobody throws out metal flash lights. They at least stash them in a drawer.
