Thought the bit on Canada TV from the recent Forbes valuation article should be included here.

The renewal of that deal will likely see CBC share some games with TSN or Rogers Sportsnet, and go for around $200 million a season, surpassing the 10-year, $187 million a season national broadcast agreement the NHL has with NBC Sports that began with the 2011-12 season. Such a deal would mean a bigger increase in revenue for Canadian teams because even though 65% if they (sic) money will go to the 23 U.S. franchises, on a per-team basis the 7 Canadian franchises will get almost double the amount of their American rivals.
|
1) Sportsbusinessdaily.com and forbes.com seem to be wildly apart on the value of this deal. The former placing it between $350-$400 million, the latter at ~$200 million. Mind you Forbes could be talking about the HNIC deal only, whereas the initial article in this thread seems to be looking at all national broadcast agreements.
2) Going with the $200M figure, this would work out to be $6.67M in HRR for each team, so $3.33M to the salary cap. However, if the 7 Canadian teams split 35% of this revenue, that means Canadian clubs are getting $10M each in real money, while the US teams would get ~$5.65M each.
That means that the cap amount from this revenue is basically entirely subsidized for the Canadian teams. Whereas the US teams would have the HRR going up by $1M more than they actually receive.
Just an interesting insight into the breakdown of this stuff.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 42s
Pains me to report this, but NHL closing in on landmark CDN TV deal with two CDN networks. Many years (10+), many billions. #overandout
The way Bob McKenzie phrased his tweet, TSN may be left out! Guessing CBC and Sportsnet will win the national broadcast rights

I wonder if Global is in the mix. They've never done to sports what CTV or CBC has done, might be time to make a major play.

Wait, what does this mean? No more national broadcasts on TSN? Just regional Jets coverage?

Wow. Best case scenario I guess would be to get the great traditional CBC broadcast with an upgraded tam, featuring some TSN talent.
Grab Cuthbert, Mackenzie and some others.

Yup that's what Bob is implying. No more TSN national broadcasts for 10+ years.
Huge loss for TSN if it plays out that way.

I'm a little young, but this would be the second time they've lost national rights, correct?

Wow. I'm not even the biggest fan of TSN, but that blows.
Can't imagine McKenzie/Dreger/Cuthbert/Miller will stay at TSN then?

Didn't Rogers just get a new CEO? Could play a factor either way.

I think you could read it that CBC is losing HNIC as well, seeing as it's an institution, but more likely TSN which seems a really strange move for them
either way it sounds like Sportsnet is in, and one of TSN/CBC are out nationally

If Sportsnet barges into the national stage, I wonder what that does for the regional broadcasts.

How long is the Flames deal with Sportsnet? It'd be great to see try to make a play for more regional teams then.

Yah, they lost them to "CTV Sportsnet" when Sportsnet first started back in '98. They had them for 5 seasons.

Sounds like CBC is in according to this article from the Globe and Mail.

It could be worse for the Americans, the Canadian teams could have kept the Canadian broadcast rights for themselves. They got greedy and both sides agreed to share both the Canadian and American rights as the Canadians thought the American rights would be more valuable. We all know how that has worked out with Gary at the helm.

Will that mean that they (sportsnet) will fix the audio issues now?

As others have said, we are talking about the Canadian TV rights, so taking on the NFL and Sunday is not a bad idea north of the border...........NHL wins the ratings battle there I would assume.
Plus NFL only conflicts with the first half of the season anyway.

Just imagine, audio delayed goals coast to coast!
It would be a real shame to lose TSN, but if Glen Healy gets replaced by all the good TSN talent, that might be worth it.

Cbc should retreat to what it is good at - news. With TSN and Sportsnet around, no need for them to be in sports. No need to pay MacLean and Cherry combined over $1 million on the taxpayer dime per year. Let the private networks handle the sports and scale back CBC to its strength - news.
Off topic but Steve Armitage is doing the speed skating commentary for Sochi. He is indicative to what is wrong with cbc sports. Old hacks that can't make it anywhere else but make a very good living off the taxpayer while delivering a less than mediocre service.
