I honestly do not care if this is non-retroactive, grandfathered or not. This is absolutely a bone headed policy. I get there is a very small segment of society this benefits, but this would be like saying every single new automobile sold in the Vancouver area going forward, must have a wheelchair ramp, and hand controls, and it is up to you to remove them, if you don't like them. If someone is building a custom home, they should be able to put giant rubber dildos as doorknobs if they so choose. Then again, I suppose if you used a giant dildo orientated correctly, it would pass city inspection and be deemed more appropriate than a door knob.

It may not seem like much at all,
it may sound simple to you,
but if you get to know a lever,
surely you will love it too!

I'll admit, SUN headline writers deserve to be beaten with a sack of doorknobs but:

"Welcome to Bancouver."

That was clever.

Stupid law to apply to new homes
Levers are the best thing to happen to door technology. I installed them on my exterior doors. Much less of a pain when you're trying to carry something in, eg) giant bag of rice, sleeping child, bags of groceries, etc.

If your deadbolt is at a reasonable height, your kids and pets should be safe. If they can reach it, then they are probably of the age to operate a door knob. As of this moment, I don't think many pets can unlatch a deadbolt.

I have only one knob in my place, but if the city wants it they can pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Call me old fashioned, but I never did like levers in homes. I'll stick to my door knobs.

I don't like when the city bans things like this out of principle. In practice though, I can't recall any new houses that still have door knobs and prefer the lever handles myself as they are easier to open when your hands are full.

That said, my front door is one where you have to push down and pull.

Which I like but would be hard for someone with grip strength issues to open with one hand and given my knowledge of how slippery slopes work I am now against this because I am worried about where they will stop.

That sucks, the belt loop always slips off the lever handles just as I start picking up steam.
