Perhaps it's my ignorance, how are the current cameras run? The current infrastructure, as I understand it has cameras throughout all the NHL arenas. Mostly manned but not all of them.

The NHL has access to all the video from all the cameras. There must be someone that ensures that all the cameras are on and working in case of the need for video review.

That person (or team) that currently ensures that the current system in place for each game, would also ensure the additional twelve cameras are also running properly, which would be stationary, set on a fixed point and unmanned. So the only manpower needed is to ensure the cameras are turned on and recording. This marginal cost would rest with whomever currently is responsible for setting up all the other cameras and recording for video review.

Currently, it works like this:
The NHL has 4 of their own cameras in each building. Two above the nets and two inside the nets. There are a couple of NHL-employed techs in each rink to make sure they are working each night. The league records these feeds independently of the broadcasters and can play them back when they want. They have direct feeds of these cameras in Toronto. For ANY other angles, they are entirely dependent on the broadcasters. Should the broadcaster choose not to show a certain angle in their show, they NHL would not see it as part of their review.
Cameras used in live situations typically do not record themselves. Their output is fed to a broadcast mobile where an operator is responsible for recording the feed and playing it back for replays etc. So with all the extra cameras being proposed in this thread, you would need many more bodies to play back all the new angles.

I wouldn't think so... Same guys for nhl working the cameras. If I can start 10 gopro cameras with my phone I'm sure a couple guys could run more then 4.

Then you don't have to monitor them. Just patch them back to Toronto so they have extra angle while they are reviewing a goal. I'm sure in most cases of goal review you can eliminate half the camera feeds right of the bat due to players bodies in the way etc.

In my mind the infrastructure is already there. The techs have to check more cameras, but they can be done by the same people already employed by the NHL in the rinks. The feeds go to Toronto where they are recorded to hard drives there with the ability for playback.

The cost is the additional 12 cameras per arena, the re-positioning of the camera above the net (so the camera is directly above the cross bar and goal line), and additional recorders in the NHL war room.

I'm of the same mind as stang, I don't see how manpower would vary at all.
