Cory was still a good player when we traded him, but you have to remember that the trade was just to get younger and move Tanguay before he pouted away any trade value he had left. Cory was just a little too old to be part of the rebuild. I was still bummed when I heard we traded him, but I understood. Congrats Cory.
Also keep in mind we put his value right in the toilet with the way the Flames used him.
“We have great friends in Calgary. It wasn’t just six years of hockey. I was there three or four years before that. So it’s been 10 years that Calgary was my home. And I think it’ll always be home for us, once hockey’s all said and done.
Nice to see that him and his family have called Calgary home even before he signed his contract here, and will probably call it home after.

Sarich was unfairly the whipping boy around here. I was always a fan, and he was great in the community as well.
Glad to see him appreciated where he is.
Problem is when someone sign a big contract, pretty much everyone around here in CP expects them to score a lot of goals even if the guy is defensive defenseman. I thought it was kind of unfair.. so people who hates the guy just look for something like he is too slow and always our of position and stuff.
I like Sarich because I think he is a team player. He can hit, fight if he has to or play big minutes. I am glad he is doing well in Colorado. I just he sucks against the Flames this week.
So why did Brent and Hartley hate him? He spent way too many nights in the pressbox when he was here
I think with Brent he became a victim of the team trying to move away from Darryl's approach of a big, slow team. When Feaster took over he emphasized getting faster and Sarich stood out as the slowest skater on the blueline. Better skaters like Butler, Smith and Brodie kind of took his spot.
As for Hartley I'm not sure. Maybe it was the same reasons as Brent that he wasn't fast enough to keep up the higher tempo he was trying to implement or maybe it was Bob being Bob and just didn't like the way Sarich looked at him one day.
I think on a more talented team that plays solid team defense a guy like Sarich can have a role but on a bad team like Calgary where there's not a great team defensive concept he stands out at times because he's not fast enough to chase guys and the way this team plays defensively the defensemen are hung out to dry often.

A friend of mine was fishing up in Northern Saskatchewan. Sarich was in the same camp as them with a bunch of his buddies. They were having horrible luck, couldn't find the fish. So finally on day three my buddy told him where to go to find the pickerel (for you Albertan's that's the fish you have to draw for, lol). They ended up just slaying them, couldn't keep them off the hook. So that night as my buddy and his friends are sitting around the fire, Sarich walks up with a 66 of Grey Goose in his hand. He plops it down on the picnic table, cracks it, throws the lid in the fire and says "Thanks a lot for the tips guys, you gave us the best day of fishing we've ever had, enjoy." then turns around and walks back to his cabin before they could even say thank you.
Pretty neat thing to do regardless of who you are, but speaks to the kind of guy Sarich is..

@SUNGilbertson: Fascinating fact about former #Flames D Cory Sarich, now in Colorado: His shin-pads are 19. Avalanche teammate Nathan MacKinnon is 18.

Forgot about this fight. Sarich (Cgy) vs Glencross (Edm).
I remember Godard punching the goalie, but I didn't remember this. Sarich gave it to Glencross pretty good. The linesmen were tied up and you could tell Glencross wanted to bail, but sarich kept popping him in the chops.

Yeah, I think a lot of it had to do with management direction. Feaster was trying to be everything that Darryl was not, "puck moving defenseman" was what "No 1 C" was last year.... shipped out or benched anyone who was fast, and it was all about puck moving D.

But let's not get carried away, Sarich hasn't suddenly become a good defenceman again. His numbers are propped up from playing a bit role on a hot team.
So why did Brent and Hartley hate him? He spent way too many nights in the pressbox when he was here
He had limited mobility, wasn't great at moving the puck, would get occasionally beat badly at the opposition blueline for a breakaway or odd-man rush, would get beat by speed along the boards in his own zone, would take bad penalties. He certainly had some stretches where he was pretty good. But overall he had to be sheltered because of his poor skating and mediocre puck skills. His strengths and weaknesses are somewhat similar to O'Brien's. Sarich had some more spectacular hits but I think O'Brien is more of an agitator.
Add in the fact that our defense was slightly deeper previously with Bouwmeester and you can see how Sarich would be scratched. O'Brien would probably be a frequent scratch too if we still had Bouw.
If we could go back in time I'm sure Feaster would take the Regehr trade back and try and dump Sarich instead. I wanted him gone for years as he was overpaid the whole time until his last contract.
