Is that the excuse they're going to use now?...

Excuse 1: It's because we have a crappy arena if we get one that's good for hockey they will come!

Excuse 2: Okey, we have a new arena but we have a crappy team if we get one that's good they will come!

Excuse 3: Okey, we have a new arena and a team that's good but we're owned by the league if we get a new owner they will come!

and now(?)

Excuse 4: Okey, we have a new arena and a team that's good and a new non-league owner but we're playing a boring style of hockey if we get a new style of play they will come!

The Arizona Coyotes... the NHL Franchise's equivalency of a high maintainance GF.

Isn't the arena pretty much in the middle of nowhere?

I heard it's pretty much 45 mins one way, if not more, from Scottsdale. Not 100% certain, but the location of the arena could have a lot to do with it as well. If a game is happening during the week and your slated to get home after midnight, some people might opt not to go.

The weekend though, they seem like to draw a decent crowd.

Went to my first game there just a couple weeks ago actually, Coyotes vs Senators. Game was actually pretty entertaining, arena is great, the immediate area around the arena was awesome (resteraunts and bars and such).

Honestly I think it's just the location of the rink that's the biggest killer. There's no apparent public transit that I could see and the rink seems to be at least a half hour away for most people to drive. And driving really is the only way to get there so people are going to need a vehicle and a lot more time on their hands to go see games on a regular basis.

Poor, poor choice for an arena location. Makes me hopeful the rumours of a potential new location for the Flames new rink around Balzac will never become more than just rumours.

The Coyotes have been a boring team the least 5 years or so, but they have been scoring more this season. They came back after being down 3-1 to win in a shootout yesterday.

The fans have no excuse.

5 more years, I suppose.

Honestly, I didn't like the arena at all when I was there for a pre-season game. I don't like the cut off corners in the upper bowl, and it seems like it would be a difficult arena to get from lower to upper level when busy.

Agreed on location. It helps that the arena is right on their ring road freeway, but even from downtown on a Sunday, it took me about 25 minutes to get there. From the east side you're not looking at a short drive.

Still, people would go if they were more interested. That is something the owners have to work on encouraging. But in year one, a non-draw like Nashville on a Halloween Thursday is going to result in bad things.

They actually had a customer service guy from the Coyotes call me after the game to get opinion and feedback on how to make it better. So they are trying!

I know they're also encouraging tailgating on all weekend games as well which should help. If I had played my cards right I could have been significantly more intoxicated watching the Coyotes and Wings on the Saturday! (and subsequently have Mike Smith kill my buzz live in person by demolishing my fantasy team with his goal )

Legit question for Bouw here, because this is something I thought about after watching a 'yotes-Flames game. I find the style of hockey they play just so nauseating (I don't mind defensive hockey at all, but the obvious lack of offensive thrust is brutal to watch), but I totally get the strategy. Do what you can with what you have, and do whatever it takes to win. That is clearly working (wins-wise) but it is an incredibly boring product.

My question in, lets say the Coyotes pull an Oilers over the last few years and get 3 or 4 really dynamic, highly-touted offensive kids and go with a run and gun style. They likely have more losses than wins because they open up more, but they play a really exciting brand of hockey. Do you think they sell more tickets/generate more interest if they play more like the guys up north, regardless of wins and losses?

Have you watched any Yotes games this year? I can barely stand watching them when the Flames play them, let alone a team I don't support.

Canucks games are pretty entertaining, despite the atrocious crowd, and it's fun to see them lose.

7,400 people at $10/ticket = $74,000. That's still a lot of money...

Damn it, really? I have some nosebleeds for the Flames/Yotes CBC game in March and was hoping to move down after the first period. Probably no go eh?

I'm going to two games in December and I was hoping for the same thing.

Not when you add up the expenses for that game... doubt they even came close to breaking even.

Although, not know the operating expenses of running a hockey team it's pure speculation. Myself, if I made $74,000 in a day. I'd be pretty happy with that.

They spend $1,527,538 in salary per home game (near cap) so yeah it's a sad situation. They should have been in Hamilton 4 years ago. Bettman suckered in some new owners who'll take the fall for another 5 years, enough time for him to retire.

Apples and oranges.

NYR and Bruins have two of the largest and oldest fanbases. They also have much more dense citites with a much higher local population draw. Not to mention that the stadiums in NYC and Boston are tiny for cities of that size. Therefore, generally, they'll be a shortage of tickets.

10,452 fans is decent for a Wednesday night for a small market club like Phoenix.

What's the NHL's return policy? Did RSE keep the receipt?

You're so predictable.

Just because the story won't die, doesn't mean it's tired or you wouldn't be interested. Also I don't hate Bettman or anyone, he's just incompetent.
