Man look at Hertl's FO%....impressive! Little too early to be naming Monahan as being consistent as well.

Well, we don't have to come to a decision right now. It's nice to have a thread updated periodically of where the rookies all stand. The "how are the other top picks doing" thread is kind of hit and miss.

Don't be too impressed wtih the FO win percentage yet. Hertl very rarely takes face offs for the Sharks so it's a small sample size. I think he's taken something like 10 face offs all season and only a max of about 2 per game (usually 1 or 0). Still - I'd like to see what he can do with a larger sample size.

Nice that the top candidates are in the west...no east coast bias from the "professional" hockey writers association.
My guess is Jones will win it. Monahan and Hertl have a solid chance too, but I bet they each have a lengthy draught at some point.

Way too early to predict individual awards let alone Calder trophy. Some rookies usually starts well because not a lot of players are paying attention to them seriously. Then when they get noticed, their play goes down. Some just continues with their good start to finish, while others are slow starter.

Chiasson is a bit of an underdog, but I can see him hanging in there and maybe getting a nomination over a few higher profile names.

Florida really is the black hole of hockey. Barkov has looked as good as any rookie but he basically doesn't exist in these discussions. He'll be a dominant center by the time he's 20.

There's also more to hockey than scoring, although the Calder trophy is heavily based on that.
Still, a lot of rookie scoring comes from being fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time because they're very rarely players who carry their teams. You have teams that are flying high to start the season, you have teams that have no clue, and so on.

If Monahan is in the race by the seasons end, he should get an edge for playing in what is a clearly inferior team overall to many of the other top candidates.
I'd like to see Seth Jones get some attention, he's been great for the Predators. Second in TOI, top 5 in SOG, 5 points in 12 games, +/- 0 on a team that's -9.

For some reason I am getting some satisfaction about Drouin the #3 pick being back in the minors.

Perhaps, but on the other hand, playing for lesser team will give opportunities as well, so it's not that clear cut. More competition for ice time on a good team. And again, consider Barkov in Florida in this context. That team is a mess.
To me it's more about being lucky enough to get on a team that has structure, a solid spot in a team that knows what it's doing. In that sense, the Flames haven't been that bad. Sean has benefited from Hudler's start and had a pretty headache-free time with regard to his role.
Although no doubt he deserves all the praise he's getting and more, Seth Jones has been very fortunate to have such a rock solid position to fill, much like Brodin was last season. MacKinnon is on a team that has started hot and been scoring tons.
Hard to compare the situations. I don't think anyone should get a significant edge based on where they play. There will probably be many worthy candidates this season and it won't matter much who gets it. Who won the Calder in Iggy's rookie season? Hardly matters. I think all these young players bring a lot of excitement to the league.

Hertl has taken 14 faceoffs this season.
Monahan has taken 160.

FAR too early to say any rookie goalie is in the mix yet.
Andersen in AHA and Lack in VAN are the only rookie goalies who have done anything positive at all.

When was the last time the Flames had three rookies in the top 30 of rookie scoring?
