Always found it totally bizarre that Fata could destroy the AHL so badly and be so useless at the NHL level.

Bill Mikkelson of the Washington Capitals was a -82 in 1974-75

This is kind of sad for Fata. Although he's been vilified on here, I think he was always an honest player. He just wasn't good enough for our liking.

-46 was the worst on that team...

After we picked Monahan, I was secretly hoping the hockey gods would pay us back after Fata and Tkachuk. So far, so good

I'd imagine it's a player from the Caps 74-75 team, heard something about a -82 for one player, dno who though.

Sorry, but Eric Nystrom is EXACTLY what he was projected to be. That was a weak draft and the Flames did not reach for him. He is no where near a bust.

Kobasew has had a serviceable NHL career. Not a bust.

Tkaczuk was concussed out of the league.

Hardly matters what label you put on it. It's a pathetic string of drafting producing dang near zilch.

Nystrom pick was not a bust. There's no way to spin it into being one.

The point is that while the bust label maybe hyperbole the fact is the Flames drafting sucked beyond belief for years on end. There is no spinning that either.

I agree on Kobasew and Tkaczuk. But from what I recall, Nystrom was projected to be a very solid thirdliner at worst. And he didn't achieve that.

Only guys picked after Nystrom that ended up being better:

13. Semin
24. Alex Steen
25. Cam Ward
54. Duncan Keith
58. Jiri Hudler
95. Filppula
241. Wideman

And of this list, Keith is the only true stud.

Don`t get me wrong, I like Nystrom, and he was a fair 3 liner, but if you have the 10th pick in the draft, you don`t want to use that on a 3rd line player. I want more out of that pick.

Who on that list would you pick in the first round if you have to do it over again?

I would argue the following players are better too:

Chris Higgins
Daniel Paille
Jim Slater
Jarrett Stoll
Trevor Daley
Tomas Fleischmann
Greg Campbell
James Wisniewski
Max Talbot

I would argue that they are comparable...Fleischmann is better though.

I don't think some people understand what bust means. Guys who became long term nhlers are not busts

2002 was a pretty weak draft. I don't think the Flame could have done much better around the 10th overall pick. Within the top 30 - Cam Ward, Alex Steen and Alex Semin are probably the only players that really turned into much more than what Nystrom did. And realistically, there were maybe 5-10 players that were "in the running" around pick number 10 at the time.

Also as much I dislike him, I am not sure how Erixon can be considered a bust just yet.
