Nah. For it to be tanking, it has to be on purpose. In Edmonton's case, they're just an especially good team at sucking.

Actually if you check last seasons schedule they lost a bunch of 1 goal games at end of the season but were scoring lots of goals the month prior... Just sayin.

Worst tankers ever? Calgary Flames. Never had a top 5 pick draft pick.
Best tankers ever? Edmonton Oilers. #1 pick 3 years in a row (although technically the lottery helped them the one year they finished 2nd last).

Karma sucks don't it. Because in the end I'd rather have Stamkos and McKinnon, or whoever goes #1 in the next draft, then the 3 losers Edmonton got. That said I would take hall anytime in a winning organization, but in Edmonton, his career will fail!

I'd rather have any of the 1st overall picks in the last ten years than the 3 guys that Edmonton got. Except for Eric Johnson in 2006. The true art of the oilers organization's tanking is in the fact that they've managed to be sooo bad for sooo long and not really get any better. Their picks outside of the first round have been terrible and they have just ignored their entire organizational depth for years. Their rebuild plan seems to be to finish last every season and fill every spot in their line up with the same type of player using that first pick... Meanwhile assuming the defense and goaltending would just work itself out.

I'd rather have Hall over Kane (I can't stand him, and really don't see him having the value we attribute him to having now without Toews) and Fleury too.
So a bit dramatic when that leaves you with MacKinnon (you can't honestly tell me at this point in his career you'd rather have Nate over Hall), Tavares, Stamkos, Crosby and Ovechkin. With the latter 4 are obvious improvements over the Oiler 3, I still get your point: The Oilers, with 3 of the last 10 1st overall picks have managed to miss out on the top 4 picks in the last decade. Impressively bad luck really.
Even funnier when you consider that the last team to draft 3 1st overall picks in a row was the Nordiques; who drafted Sundin, Nolan and Lindros. We all know how Lindros worked out, but still a great player at #1.

Depends on the definition or use of the word worst. Worst can sometimes mean best, and in this instance I think the writer was saying the Flames are doing their best to tank by icing the worst lineup possible. He's also saying that the Flames are the worst in hiding the fact they are trying to make their best attempt to secure that high draft pick. Isn't English a fun language!

He's suggesting that they're so inept, even when trying to tank, they can't do it right.
But he's wrong, as we're neither trying to tank, nor actually tanking.

I think he's saying that "management" is trying to tank EXCEPT the team is winning instead of losing ergo the worst tank job.

Gifted, even. Some might even say "special."

That's where you look at context. It's easy to see which was meant after reading the thread and article.

These five picks of the Oilers (Hall, RNH, Yak, Nurse, Eckblad) hopefully turn out similar to the Sens from 1992-1996 (Yashin at 2, Daigle at 1, Bonk at 3, Berard at 1, and Philips at 1).

That's pretty much the best case scenario at this point for the Oilers.

Berard was a pretty good pick and Philips is a solid defender too. I hope more for Ekblad, he seems like a good kid and I don't wish the oilers on anyone.

Oilers with 3 first over all picks in a row is the benchmark for tanking

The thing is our success rate can't be maintained. Our shooting % is way to high to be sustainable so we will come back to earth sooner rather than later. However I have been enjoying the ride.
We will still miss the playoffs this year but at least this team is fun to watch. This performance so far bodes really well for the future.

Agreed, that shooting percentage is absolutely unsustainable. I think, however, that our special teams will improve as the season goes on; particularly the penalty kill. Also having Cammalleri back at some point should improve the power play (although it hasn't been terrible barring the first couple games).

Oilers have made an art form of tanking.
