So Firefly, I'll be the first to ask. Why don't you leave? Sounds like a shinguardty company to work for, so why not go somewhere else?

If it was a shinguardty company to work for, I wouldn't cross a picket line to do it. I love my job, I love the pay, I love the people I work with and for. Telus gives me excellent perks like tickets to movies, and a free jacket in the winter, and a free umbrella, and a zippo barbeque lighter, and many many other things. I generally like the customers, and like what I do. I don't plan on being here forever, but if I was, I wouldn't mind it, and would consider moving up into management, or going into marketing.

The only thing I have a problem with is the union. They've been 'bargaining' for 5 years and haven't come up with anything, but the exact same agreement with raises. That's what I paid them for? Five years and that's it? They aren't bargaining, they're creating fear among employees, and they're full of shinguard. They are the NHLPA of the telecommunications industry. They've told me to get another job, with the competition. Funny, Shaw is our competition... same union though.

I have no complaints about Telus. I won't get into all the details, but let's just say they're treating me like gold for crossing the picket line to support them. They appreciate me, and I appreciate what they've given me.

Telus has been named one of Canada's top 10 employers for a number of years, and no, that isn't just because of their union agreements. It's because of the little things they do, their equal opportunity stance, etc. I work for Mobility, and Telus Mobility has been named the #1 Wireless Company in all of North America. I'm proud to work for them.
This bites. I feel for you. Not many people this day and age can say as many nice things about the company they work for.

Darn those meritocracies that reward people for working hard and liking their job!!

When I am looking to hire people, I am most interested in character, honesty, and the person's reasons for WANTING to work with me. If I was your boss and you said these things to me, then you would have to really fata up to not have a job for life. I hope your boss knows this commitment.
Thank you, I'm sure they do.

That's another funny thing. The union is telling people that people who cross the line will be fired... now why the hell would Telus do that? And what kind of idiot would believe such tripe?

I don't know guys. Sure Telus isn't a great company and sure, their workers aren't the best workers and they hate each other to death...

But after an NHL lockout where grown adult men squabbled and locked themselves out over million dollar paycheques, it makes them look really greedy and stupid when you see blue-collar workers trying to do the same for much less in life.

While idly cycling through the downtown core today, i came across a batch of Telus picketers.# All their little vesty things said:# "Locked out"

I wanted to ask them what the dealio was, but I didn't really care

they probably don't care either
oh, they care. they really care don't kid yourself
A lot of my friends are out picketing back and forth just to get their 16 hours in for the week(mandatory by the union). Many are just going through the motions. I'm sure some really care. Go to BC if you want some real hard core anti-telus action!

Hey Firefly! My cousin is coming back from Edmonton on Tuesday and is crossing the picket line! He's talked to alot of people at Telus Mobility and they are crossing also. They just want a few days off work before heading back.

He too also loves his job and he said his pay is more than satisfactory. I think he might have to cab it to work though as his bosses told him not to drive there. Talk about mafia!

He shouldn't have to worry about it now. Telus won an injunction preventing any of the picketers from disturbing people coming to and from Telus property. Frick man, I walk to work! And there are actually more people who have crossed than are out picketing, and some of those who are picketing are only doing so because they believe the union speal about Telus firing them if they cross...

It's probably far more likely that Telus will fire them if they don't cross.
What I don't understand is why they are even still picketing, they don't get paid their measly $200 bucks for like 3 weeks while the people working inside are enjoying the benefits of crossing the line by being treated like all-star employees and growing fat.
And isn't this strike illegal?, as far as I know there was no Strike Ratification vote by the union.

Because Telus is imposing partial lockout measures on it's employees.... (oh my God, I got a raise... ) they can strike at anytime.

Did you even read her posts. She has said just the opposite. If she was a union backer then that post would make sense. Unless you are kidding around.
Hey easy there captain perfect!

I had a brain cramp and thought Firefly meant the company was dragging their feet, not the union.

Sounds like a lot of people are crossing the picket line though.

Blackberries are taking longer to activate now, about 3 days. Got to love the logic of the union, amputate the hand that feeds you. So what happens when all the client base runs to Bell or Rogers? Less workers are needed. Brilliant.

I really, really hate unions. This one is yet another reason why... I mean, intimidation, vandalism and what not... disgusting.

They've pretty much outlived their usefulness too, unions were designed to protect people from breaches of safety and unfair treatment, at least thats what people like Cesar Chavez believed in. Now its a giant tool for people crying "where's my grift?"

I'm really disgusted at the striking workers in Vancouver's port about trucking. Apparently they fired weapons and hurled projectiles at scab trucks as well as slashed tires and other forms of vandalism designed to intimidate. In that case, I'd bring in the military to carry out the trucking, or to convoy those who continue to work, and order them to fire upon whoever fires on a military or civilian truck. Lets see how tough those cowards are then.

Maybe I'm just cranky after a long day.

actually, Telus Picket holders have to put in 16 hours per week but they also make 1000.00 per month. Also........I had one guy today tell me that I could go on EI while on strike with the union.........tht was a good laugh! Maybe someone can shed some light on this one.

It takes about 3 weeks to get your first weeks strike pay, which is about $250. As far as the EI thing goes, I believe it has to be a lockout situation for that.

By striking they may already be showing that less workers are needed, if management and workers that cross the picket line can keep things running that might already show that less workers are needed and just cut some picketing fat from the organization.

I wonder if the picketers know how Telus is treating the people that cross, if they did I don't think they would still be outside picketing.

Sorry to break into this little love-in but from Dictionary.com it defines a scab as

a] A worker who refuse membership in a labor union.

b] An employee who works while others are on strike; a strikebreaker.

c] A person hired to replace a striking worker.

I'd like to know how anyone can sue someone for defamation of character if in fact you are what they say you are.

It can be argued that you are the one being brainwashed or bought off by your Zippo lighter etc. Perhaps if you respected your fellow workers you wouldn't need to worry about your safety, not that you should need to.
