My guess is that we'll get those updates tomorrow as cuts start happening.

I didn't even realize McKelvie was invited to camp, but it's interesting that he is being used as a forward, he was a tough guy in the Heat blueline last year.

There was a good story about McKelvie in the paper on Saturday:

http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/09/13...n-the-trenches

Quote:
The 28-year-old McKelvie, who is signed to an AHL-only deal with the Abbotsford Heat for the upcoming season, is one of the most intriguing stories at Flames training camp at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre, a prospect who put his professional puck dreams on hold during a two-year active stint in the U.S. Army.
“It was tough to get back into (hockey), from a certain standpoint, but it helped me grow as a person and as a man, and I wouldn’t trade those two years for anything,” McKelvie said. “It was frustrating not to play hockey, but my experience in the military was unbelievable and just made me more prepared to play professional hockey.
“The U.S. Army is a first-class organization — I believe the best organization in the world. Their attention to detail is second-to-none and they’re just so professional in everything they do, it makes it an easy transition to professional hockey.”
Quote:
There weren’t a lot of bird-dogs in the bleachers at West Point, either, but it was during McKelvie’s senior season as captain of the Army Black Knights that he caught the eye of a Boston Bruins employee.
“I was doing all the college stuff for Boston and I went to a West Point game, really, to see a player on the other team,” recalled John Weisbrod, now assistant GM for the Flames. “You don’t usually recruit guys from the academies because of the service that they have to do, but I just couldn’t get over this guy. At the college level, he was such a good skater and he was so disciplined and so hard and tough.”
Weisbrod was so impressed that the Bruins signed McKelvie to an entry-level deal, hoping the soldier could get a special exception to complete his mandatory service time in the summers. It didn’t work out, but Weisbrod was anxious to see 1st Lieut. McKelvie on the ice again and offered him a spot on Abbotsford’s blueline last winter.
Quote:
Last year was really his first year back, and he was valuable for us in Abby because he’s an elite human being. He’s a world-class person and a great teammate and has every intangible you could want,” Weisbrod said. “It could be a unique story. He’s one of these guys that really got a late start — basically, his pro career didn’t start until he was 27 or 28 years old — and he’s still getting re-acclimated to playing the game.
“He’s had the deck stacked against him in a lot of ways, but once you get to know the kid, this is the kind of kid you don’t bet against. He’s just a remarkable, remarkable human being.
“In hockey, you always hear people say ‘This is the kind of guy you want to be in a fox-hole with.’ Well, this is the kind of guy you want to be in a fox-hole with.”

thanks MissTeeks when I heard the Heat signed Drew McKenzie to an AHL deal I was disappointed because I wanted McKelvie back instead, so it is nice to see he has an AHL deal as well. He is a really tough customer, the role he plays reminds me of Jimmy Vandermeer. Maybe that toughness is why he is playing on the wing tonight, they might be expecting a rough one.

I think they're seeing if he's worth keeping up in the NHL on the 3rd or 4th lines. My hunch is they know he's capable on a scoring line but if he's not going or there are two lines of guys who are hot, can he play on a checking line with scrubs?

It says more that they think he is very close to making the team than that they're not giving him a shot, IMO.

Glad to see Coda Gordon have a chance to play with Granlund. Will be interesting to see how he responds.

The Islanders have about three players I can name, and they're all playing in the Regina game.

Seven and a half hours of GTA V. Now for some Flames hockey. I reckon today was a good day off from work.

It blows my mind that the game hasn't even started yet and the 50/50 is already nearly $6000.

On a good night a Heat game might get up to $3500.

White jerseys at home?

Maybe the Isles only packed the dark ones.
