I'm not talking critical gems that everyone loves now that just didn't happen to sell very well. I'm talking albums you love that no one else knows about.
I'm having trouble thinking of something that fits the second category but not also the first.
But I've got the perfect example for exactly what you aren't looking for.
They are well known in music circles, but it's a shame the general public never gave them much of a look.
It's by far my favourite Eminem album. I like every song except Insane. I guess it wasn't underrated when it came out, but now it seems nobody likes it. He himself threw it under the bus.
Which is weird, because it is definitely more of a return to form.
A music geek could list 100s of good albums that few people know about.
I think both would apply. I've been thinking just kind of under appreciated by the public at large. Or maybe compared to other, more popular albums from the same band.
Either way you're right, that's what i like about these discussions. It opens up some doors to albums people not have thought of or heard about.

I didn't really want to be too specific.
I just didn't want people listing some really famous albums that could be viewed as under rated on a technicality. I just wanted to see some genuinely under rated, under appreciated albums that might be worth checking out.
Also, I'm thrilled I haven't had to defend my choice yet
Despite the fact that this album went double platinum in Canada, everyone seems to remember the Tea Party as being a gimmick band with that one song that 14 year-olds would use to break-up with each other ("Heaven Coming Down", not on this album).
This album has a great variety of tunes, each unconventional and brilliant in their own right (Jeff Martin was one of my favourite guitarists in existence during my guitar-geek days). There is a lot going on in this album, which can make it a tough listen, but imo, the best albums always require a few spins in order to be able to wrap your head around them.

I'd put it slightly ahead of Part I (not an underrated album by any means) and Indicud. I suppose certain elements of the story are a bit immature but musically he did a fantastic job.
Right now I'm going through a bit of a dream pop/psychedelia phase so I've been loading up on bands that fit those genres. Tame Impala, Pond, Melody's Echo Chamber, Beach House, Wild Nothing, Neon Indian. There's no real answer to this question for me as my most underrated album changes pretty frequently. I've over-listened to many albums that at one point I probably thought were underrated and fantastic.
That being said another album I'd throw out there is The Antlers - Hospice. I wouldn't call it underrated as The Antlers are a pretty well known band and Hospice is a well acclaimed album but it's one of the best albums I have... I just can't listen to it as album is too depressing.
Since this is about albums nobody else really knows about... absolutely Melody's Echo Chamber. It's written by the girlfriend of Kevin Parker (Tame Impala, Pond, a bunch of other stuff) and he played some instruments on and helped produce the album. I think it's better than either of Tame Impala's albums.

That album is pretty much perfect except for Elephant Stone. The bass line on I Wanna Be Adored is so simple, but just so awesome.
I listened the hell outta that album, and still occasionally play it. I don't know if it's "underrated" though, it was and is rated pretty highly, so I agree with your statement.
