I'm really surprised Munich didn't submit a bid. I figured they were a shoe-in.

They bid for 2018 I think

There's a real possibility of Calgary bidding for 2030

Munich held a referendum in the four regions that were to be a part of the bid with the question being whether to go forward with the bid. It was defeated for a few reasons: Environmental concerns and opposition to the IOC being the biggest ones.

Hence Munich won't bid for the Games anytime soon.

They did and came in 2nd. Personally I thought they had a much better bid than Pyongchang but oh well.

Is there some form of a rotation system for the Olympic hosts, like for the World Cup?

Not officially is my understanding. But there' s a lot of wink wink nudge nudge bid encouragement going on from what I hear.

"There must be major changes in the IOC before I can help to support an Olympic application," said Tromsø Mayor Jens Johan Hjort.

Stoking some of that anger was the IOC's list of demands for an Oslo bid, which included a cocktail reception with Norway's king, with the tab on either the royal family or the Norwegian Olympic Committee. Among the IOC's other demands:
  • Cars and drivers for IOC members, with special dedicated highway lanes
  • Street lights synchronized to prioritize IOC traffic
  • Separate airport entrance for IOC members
  • Hotel mini-bars must have only Coca-Cola products
  • Samsung phones for all IOC members
  • All meeting rooms must be kept at exactly 68 degrees.
  • All furniture must have "Olympic appearance."
  • "IOC members will be received with a smile on arrival at hotel"

What a joke! After reading that I no longer support hosting the olympics. With the way the olympics are being run I wouldn't shed a tear if no city ever wanted to host an olympics and the games just died. With blatent corruption, astronomical expenses, environmental concerns, human rights violations, etc the olympics are becoming a joke.

As long as there are dictators/autocratic contries, and network TV there will be Olympics.

I think I read that Tokyo will probably be the last democracy hosting an Olympic games.

Zimbabwe 2034 or Saudi Arabia 2038 anyone?

Qatar is likely going to have to do something with all of those empty buildings...

Personally, I think Almaty had the strongest bid going in anyways.

In the true spirit of the games, the IOC should be a non-profit entity, managed mainly by volunteers.
