Why does it matter what the original article's definition of "best " is? I think the OP just wanted to use the article as inspiration to spur some discussion about the best cities in Canada.

Spokane? Really? I have a buddy that lives there and I visit him semi-annually. Not sure I would put Spokane on any best list. It's okay and all but it's like putting Lethbridge on a best city in Canada list.

Interesting US list. To me Deadwood, Sturgis, Rapid City are all the "same place", even though each is different. It is a neat area. Curious about Pocatello, I've always thought it was a dump,(but I do really like Idaho Falls)is it a good party town with the University there? Salt Lake City, there is nothing nice about that place IMO.
Whitefish always flies under the radar on these polls, likely because it is rather remote for most Mericans, and rather "anti commercial" but one of my favourite places to go.

My favourite towns/cities in Canada smaller than 200,000:
Smithers, BC
Osoyoos, BC
Lethbridge, AB
Canmore, AB
Gimli, MB
Kenora, ON
Niagara Falls, ON
Cobourg, ON
I haven't explored enough east of Ontario obviously.

Pocatello is at the base of a beautiful mountain, it's breath taking in the evenings, just beautiful. Salt Lake is a gorgeous city, all of the gold- it's just a beautiful city.
I love the drive into Pocatello:

Chalk me up as another fan of Salt Lake city. You have the mountains, salt flats, lakes. Nothing like it and Mormon women are hot. Most of the women there are all well kept and slim. Even Orange County guys that I spent time with there were saying that they are way hotter than California women.

Chicago: ruthless weather consisting of hot summers and snowy winters, ruthless traffic, and ruthless crime. Makes the list. Figures. I see that none of those things (things which matter) are metrics, but still.

San Fan is the best, and that is why it is expensive to live there.

I hate driving through Salt Lake City. It's at least 1.5 hours to get from the north end at Ogden, to the south end at Provo, on the freeway, doing the speed limit (60 mph), and that's when the traffic is good. Otherwise, it looks like a nice place.

I only lived there for about 3 years, but I liked it... well, at least the area. It's so organic and gritty.

In the past year or two it has gotten a lot better. Used to be the biggest bottleneck on the I-15 but now the construction is mostly done. Also they have a new spiffy train in town that they used Calgary as a blueprint for to some degree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRAX_(light_rail)
Salt Lake City is the only city I can think of where you can fly in and take a city bus to the likes of Alta, Brighton, Canyons Resort, Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbird, Solitude and Sundance. Having fun outside is cultural in this area. Even high schools have adventure PE class, where students get credit for leaving school to mountain-bike, trail-run, ski or snowboard with friends. For a big city Calgary and Denver come close but SLC is much closer.

I almost enjoying SeoulFire tracking down every lake joke and calling the originator a d-bag more than the actual lake jokes themselves.
