Ha...yeah my first piece of advise was threaten legal action though.

I just have a hard time believing that after a year his neighbour just woke up and decided today was the day he was going to #### with him. I suppose it's possible, and if that's the case I feel really bad for Kybosh, but I don't think it's likely. If he wants to resolve this and he can't communicate with his neighbours and doesn't want to press it further with the law at all, it seems like trying to understand his neighbours perspective makes a whole lot more sense than pissing on their yard.

All snarkiness aside, pretty good chance there's been some miscommunication, maybe they think the hedge is on the property line, I'd just keep trying to communicate with them. There's more than 1 reason why they might not have answered the door.

Nah. I'm just watching to see what advice he gets. I'll just do what I want regardless.

Next time he's out of town for the day, spray the hedge down with RoundUp. Problem solved.

I was a bit confused at first but things are pretty clear now. It's your hedge and (stray branch notwithstanding) entirely on your property. And at 5ft high it's shorter than a fence (hardly a nuisance).

Sorry Kybosh - I think you're pooched on this one. You've try to be reasonable but the neighbor clearly doesn't agree with your thoughts and feels justified by their actions. A second polite attempt (with slightly increased intensity) MAY be a good option but I think it's probably best to go straight to the "Legal" arguments.

I've dug up a couple of quick links from the city.

City Bylaw on Trees and Shubs (Not much good info here, just a couple links)

City pamphlet (PDF) on Yard Maintenance (decent, help establish you're in the right)

City of Calgary "Good Neighbor" guide (give the guy a copy may really prove a point?)

Best of luck.

To be clear, aside from talking to them again (which they don't seem interested in) I don't think there is much to be done. I'm mostly looking for a sounding board because I half expect to come home one day and find the hedge entirely gone. I had a conversation with them after the tin snips incident and it was a case of they don't like it, so nobody must like it. They don't understand that I'd prefer to have a view of a nicely manicured hedge than their driveway.

As the loss of marbles became more evident in my grandma, one of the things she did in a moment of crazy was cut down her half of a pretty nice 4-5' tall hedge between her house and the neighbour's.
I thought it was pretty funny when I saw the hedge, but now that I'm a bit older, I can see why the neighbour was so pissed off.

trim the hedge back and put a nice little 5' fence on YOUR property. If they dont like the hedge fine, they can look at a fence. I would talk to them first and explain you are going to do this and see what they say.

Since you want to sell the place it's probably best to go with what looks best, even if it's not what you really want. Would a low hedge look really bad?

I've ranted about my neighbor here before, and I really can't wait to move. I have a photo of her poisoning vegetation on my property. I have done all I can to accommodate her. I've stopped using fabric softener and scented detergent, stopped using my little tiny "wisp" air freshener because she claims she can smell it, got rid of my 3 cats (she claimed there were feces smeared all over the walls all the time..it was actually brown paint as I was doing decorative faux finish on the walls and she looked into the window and saw the first step) filled in my lily pond after she poured poison into it (she was afraid it would attract frogs)
I don't dare play music when she is home...just saying this because you never know with people, or who is going to believe them vs you. Taking legal action and making complaints against this woman would be on record and it could make it harder to sell this place, as I'm sure others beside myself like fabric softener and vines, etc. Just keep that in mind. I don't know what the disclosure rules are by you ; you surely don't want any issues when you sell.

At this point if I were you I'd make a point of using scented detergent and fabric softener while playing music non stop along with releasing a horde of frogs in your backyard. What is she going to do? Call the cops? Just tell them she's bat#### crazy and show them the pics of her poisoning your lily pond.

Nice idea. She threatened to ruin my life because I wouldn't put a camera on my front porch to spy on the alleged drug dealer across the street. She decided that I must be doing the same things he was since I wouldn't cooperate with her. She is involved in the polo community (bigger scumbags I've never met, sorry.) and has a very wealthy female friend who pays for whatever she wants (new kitchen, new pool, etc) Before the lily pond incident, she took me to court saying my cats were a nuisance and that I didn't take care of them (they were never allowed outside), the judge believed her even though she had no evidence of any of her claims. When I told the judge that she was lying about the feces on the wall, etc. the judge said "why would she lie?" This woman just wanted to hurt me as much as possible. She complained I had a "disabled car" in my carport. I had a near-mint condition 94 XJ6 that I rarely drove. So I am actually scared to death of this woman. She obviously knows somebody somewhere. In court I acted like a deer in the headlights. I could not believe this neighbor was believed without evidence.
Well, sorry for that rant. Kybosh, I'm just saying you never know what stupid crap people are capable of over absolutely nothing. Good luck to you!

Thanks, Kybosh. Every time I talk about it somehow, it feels a bit better. I have noooooo balls. Other neighbors have had problems with her (she yelled at someone for doing their lawn at 2pm Sunday--"what's all that noise , don't you know it's the Sabbath?"-wrong day, witch) but actually fear her too-except for the few that believe her . Those neighbors don't know me, so I can't get real upset with them. They're just not worth it.. Reading martha Stout's book "The Sociopath Next Door" has helped as well. There are so many cases like this discussed online that it doesn't bode well for the human race, hahaha. Send a drone over her house, right now PLEEEZZZZZ

At the very least, maybe just that chemical that makes your pee show up when take a leak in the water.

You can't put a 5' fence in the front of your house in Calgary. 4' is fine though.

So dumb question and as I live in a condo, this is purley me wondering:

Lets say:
-I live next door to someone I dislike.
-I am a total A-hole.
-his hedge is 100% on his property and not above any height limits.

I go and cut it to annoy him- Destroy it. First off, if he can't prove its me, could he do anything?

Lets say he puts a hidden cam on his hedge after he replants it, and I am stupid enough to rip it out again, what sort of legal action would I be in? What could he do, small claims court for the price of hedge? Criminal charge me for trans passing?

I would start egging that hags house on a nightly basis. Black mask, black clothes, park your car 10 blocks away, change in the car drive home.

Prove it was me.
