Travel Sub-forum Request

Maybe I'm missing something but how do you know a thread has had a new post? The "confessions" thread is often a time sensitive thread in terms of deals. I won't pop up to the top of the page like it did before correct?

Threads will still behave the same way they did before- going back up to the top when there are new posts. The only thing that has changed is that we now have one sticky thread with shortcuts to some of the past discussions. So instead of having to search all of OT for a city, and having to sift through the results, there is one place to go.

If there is a particular thread you are insterested in, you can use the "Subscribe to this thread" from the "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread. Then you can either have it in a sort of favourites list, or even get an email when a thread is updated.

Sticky thread was a brutal idea. What does it solve? Search function (or google) already found those threads, so now you've just cluttered up the OT forum with a nearly-useless thread and a bunch of dead space from the sticky formatting break.

I basically hate the use of OT subforums and have mentioned my hatred a couple of times. Unless you're an avid participant in XYZ forum, I'm never stepping foot into the subforum unless the thread is at the top on the main page.
Sad because there are probably a lot of good threads I'm missing, but its just too much damn work to monitor and go browse through all the OT subforums. Lazy, yes, but its true.

As such, I rarely go into threads in the subforums, but the travel thread solution adopted is definitely not what I was thinking...just makes things worse, and doesn't even give you a taste of what is contained within, its just a repository of links, of which could be discovered through an internal search, or a google search of Calgarypuck.

If the intent is to stop duplicate threads that clutter OT occasionally, you're basically cluttering up OT indefinitly to stop an occasional dupe thread.

Have you ever tried searching for travel threads related to an NHL city on this forum? Searching for "New York" or "Montreal" will get lots of hits but few that are actually travel related. Something like "Montreal travel" will get some of them but miss all of the "I'm going to Montreal, what should I do?" type threads or "I need a hotel in Montreal" or "Montreal tips?", etc.

I'm not sure the sticky is the best answer to anything, but it does keep the threads themselves in the main off-topic forum where people will actually see them and individual threads will still flow to the top of that forum as they're used.

Just to add to that- you said yourself that you would never go into a travel sub-forum. Neither would I- I'm not that much of a travel geek. But if I see a thread in OT related to a place I have been to, I might add my own experiences.

To me that is part of the beauty of CP. There are enough random experts on any subject that can answer questions. A lot of those people may not go into every sub-forum.

I have been on sites that have a lot of subforums, and it's a bit of a pain to find different conversations. If something isn't the top thread often I won't even go in and might miss something.

Not sure what point we're debating here, as I agree with this totally. I hate subforums, and should be used for very specific things, if at all. I think Food and Entertainment should be in the main OT forum, as well.

My gripe is with the sticky'd thread. Its a half-measure that doesn't really solve a problem well, and makes the UI experience worse for all, while really only helping in very specific cases. The search function works well, you just need to know how to use the forum search function or google properly. (OT only search for example).

I'd say leave it as it was, or make a sub-forum, not some messy bandaid solution in between.

I lould love a travel sub-forum. If one thing the sticky has shown is there are a ton of threads dedicated to travel, and it would make sence.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

But I like to see when threads have been responded to. So the most recently responded thread is on top? Am I the only one?

(Split your question out of the link thread.) No, all travel threads remain in the main Off Topic forum, along with all the other news, etc. The sticky thread is just that- a thread with links in it.

Just as any other posts you might make, they don't update on their own.
