I wonder if Dion gets more term/money?
Good signing for both the team and player

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them become the top pairing in the league at some point.

I doubt it would have. JBO needs a certain type of player to play with on the top line, and the Flames did or do not have that. Always thought JBO needed a Webber or Suter to really appreciate him. He now gets a player to play with along those lines.
I remeber talk of the Islanders being interested in him. A combo of Streit and JBO would have been awful.

Couldn't stand Bouwmeester at all under Brent, but he really changed under Hartley. Good contract for what he is. I don't think he was a whipping boy at all last season here - I thought he was one of the better (if not the best) defencemen on the Flames last season - and I HATED him before that.
He is a very good #2 defencemen, and that is what he is being paid as right now. Perfect, and paired with a good #1 defencemen. I think he will meet or even slightly exceed expectations in most of those years.

The last time he signed a long term deal, he disappeared. This could be a huge mistake.
I do agree that coaching was an issue with him though.

Bo's attitude was always far more of an issue to me than his money. He was over paid by about exactly what St Louis is getting him for. But as a leader and a go to guy, he was too okay with losing to be around for this rebuild.
I'll never forget his quote to reporters when asked if he was excited to play in the playoffs; 'Yeah... It'll be fun to play the games'
Cundari displayed more emotion in his five game callup than Bo has in his entire career.

Not sure if it is Bouws attitude more so his personality. He didn't show that emotion fans love to see in their players. Bouw was so laid back it came across that he didn't care. I do think he really cared if he didn't he would not have waived his NMC

the Blues were a 9th place team before the trade; Bouw solidified the blueline, and was the biggest reason they made the playoffs; he played great here

Whatever it was, it's not the foundation of any successful hockey team. And that's what he was being asked to be here. Part of the foundation.
As a 5.4M secondary piece, where he's got Pietrangelo, Backes, Polak, Shattenkirk, Oshie, Jackman etc to be more prominent players, he's fine. When you need him to set the tone for a franchise, you get us.

Fantastic number 2 defensemen for the price of a number 2 defensemen on a term that is 1 year too long.
This might be the est value signing of a big name player this off season. I dont think there is any other player where you looked at the number and said thats what hes worth.

I'm with GreenLantern, I think Cundari with less skill and more sandpaper will do more to contribute to a winning attitude for the franchise than Boumeister could do with semi-elite defense and smooth skating. JayBo will be excellent supporting cast, but his demeanour on the ice doesn't inspire any killer instinct among his peers.
If St. Louis can capitalize in the next 2 seasons this is a great signing/acquisition; but if they flat line like SanJose at the conference finals I could see Jaybo getting run out if town by year 4.

Still can't believe to this day how bad Phaneuf-Bouwmeester-Regehr worked together. Why didn't it work damnit!
You don't understand. We coulda had class. We coulda been a contender. We coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what we are, let's face it.

Good for him. $5.4 in 2014-2018 terms is significantly less of a percentage of the overall salary cap was the last 4 years, so good for him.
Perfect example of the reactionary nature of the Flames style in the mid 2000's. Ever since the Cup in 2004, they would have one year where they could score, but no defense. So, that next offseason fix the defense, focus on it. Then that next year with the defense in place, couldn't score goals...so bring in forwards. Bouwmeester got in on the wave where the Flames(when they lost in that series) lost big to SJ that playoff before. So, away goes Keenan, in comes Brent with a defense first style.
The new coach and style, and a big contract he felt he had to live up to, and Bouwmeester got out of what helped make him an offensive threat in FLA. That first year zapped it all out of him and never recovered under Brent.
Hartley brought that out in him, but of course the defenders around him were not as good as the years before, and moreso the defensive system last season from Hartley/Cloutier/Gelinas, was atrocious.
