He got injured in the playoffs in 2004, and missed from Game 5 vs Vancouver to Game 5 vs Tampa (20 games).
Meahwhile the Flames had to cobble together a bunch of defenseman like Brennan Evans, since Gauthier was out in the Vancouver series as well. Talk was that they were going to bring in Phaneuf and blow a year on his contract, but obviously never happened.
As another mentioned, old school Sutter didn't really care for that from Lydman, given the dire straights the team was in, and given the other injuries that others were fighting through and playing with like Lowry and his still shredded insides that had kept him out 6 months, and had him sit a couple games after he came back and wasn't over the injury early in the DET series.
