Yeah, I remember that. I think Lydman was coming off a concussion and old school Darryl didn't have the patience required. The other thing is, he needed a spot for Phaneuf and it wasn't fair to Tony to be a 7th defenceman, so Darryl made a quick trade with his buddy. Another thing is although the trade looked unequal on it's own, we made a few deals with Buffalo so it probably evened out.

Yeah, it really evened out, take the deal to get Butler for example.

That wasn't Darryl's, that was Darcy Regier's revenge for firing his buddy but if you want to feel really rotten, Butler was drafted with our 4th rounder in a deal for 3rd round pick Daniel Ryder.

He got injured in the playoffs in 2004, and missed from Game 5 vs Vancouver to Game 5 vs Tampa (20 games).

Meahwhile the Flames had to cobble together a bunch of defenseman like Brennan Evans, since Gauthier was out in the Vancouver series as well. Talk was that they were going to bring in Phaneuf and blow a year on his contract, but obviously never happened.

As another mentioned, old school Sutter didn't really care for that from Lydman, given the dire straights the team was in, and given the other injuries that others were fighting through and playing with like Lowry and his still shredded insides that had kept him out 6 months, and had him sit a couple games after he came back and wasn't over the injury early in the DET series.

Told he did very well in some business ventures back home, must be true if he can give up $5 very large.

He never would have been the 7th. Gauthier was gone in the package deal for Langkow so that spot for Phaneuf was already there, and Lydman always got more ice time than Gauthier and Ference.

Phaneuf-Leopold
Regehr-Warrener
Lydman-Ference

Would have been every bit as serviceable as the above -Lydman +Hamrlik.

Maybe from the savings and ignoring shlubs like McCarty and Amonte, we could have afforded the Niederbros.

The way I remember it was generally

Regher - Leopold or Warrener
Hamrlik - Phanuef
Ference - Warrener or Leopold

I guess the sixth and seventh spot was between Ference and Lydman and Lydman was damaged goods or at least in Sutter's doghouse.
