Just goes to show how important a role luck really plays in the NHL.

The title of that article should be "Oilers: Worst team in the NHL since 2009"

Might as well claim the title for next year. Oilers Worst team in 2013/2014.

Man do they suck.

You need to remove the "news" tag. This is not news. News implies some sort of new information. This is just a statement of a fact everyone already knows.

Always best to end the discussion when someone goes to the "I just watch the games" crap. It's absolutely meaningless. We all watch the games, including - surprise - people who look at advanced stats.

Leafs were only a playoff team because the East was weak, and NJ and PHI decided to take a year off. Now they have to deal with DET too.

Thats true, and even then thats not the whole truth, add in a shortened season and probably a lot of players having sub-par seasons for whatever reasons.

I'd almost guarantee that the Leafs wont make the playoffs next season and I think they're a better team now than they were last season.

I play hockey with Rob's brother and met Rob once at a Christmas party. He's very passionate about hockey and has some very neat insights. Here is a link to his website with "Player Usage Charts", they are very interesting to play around with.

As we saw with the Flames, losing is hard, but the Oilers make it look like an everyday routine.

10-0? Just another day at the office.

http://www.hockeyabstract.com/luck

Team Luck Chart is here too and interesting because you can remove certain variables.

IMO in injury data is useless and the rest is relevant with PDO getting a full rating and the rest getting a half rating. Doesn't provide any info on how it will regress back to the curve however.

Man, I hope Leafs/Wings play each other like they did in the 70/80's, now that was entertainment.

Everyone watches the games. It's not an argument against anything to say "I actually watch the games so all these fancy, new stats don't matter". Try using all your 2013 Toronto Maple Leaf watching experience to perhaps break down why you disagree.
