That may be true but it would be a new level of moronic for the Canucks to use a regular buyout on Luongo when they could have used a special compliance buyout earlier this summer or later next summer.
The money is the exact same for both buyouts, but if they buy him out now their salary cap hit would be significant instead of zero with a compliance buyout.
The only team that could possibly justify using a regular buyout is a team that has burned both compliance buyouts (ie. not Vancouver). Even then, they should be able to just trade the player. Most of the "worst contracts in the NHL" have been bought out now.
